Heather's actions

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 04 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Personal Waste Audit

The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 20 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 10 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 20 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 20 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Plastic in Clothing and Water

Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 20 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Endangered Species

Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 20 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 10 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests Personal Waste Audit
What are the results of your waste audit and what did you learn? How can you reduce your waste going forward?

I've always recycled, long before it was easy. My mom and I would set aside some time to do all the recyclng and take it somewhere and it was a whole thing. I've even brought home things from vacation instead of throwing them away, haha. It's just engrained. So my recycling bin is always overflowing and my garbage not even full even though I only have a small can and every other week. I do try and find products that contained recycled products if possible and that can be recycled and refill and reuse when possible. But there's always more..
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Heather Reese's avatar
    Heather Reese 4/26/2024 10:28 AM
Interesting that light is better than white for mercury in canned tuna but I don't eat enough of it to worry so much about that, same with the fish they say not to eat. Though Chinook Salmon from the Puget Sound concerns me in general luckily there are many other healthy options and that's my main fish choice when I eat it and wild is pretty easy to come by.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Heather Reese's avatar
    Heather Reese 4/26/2024 10:21 AM
The biggest water problem I have is that I don't have control over the front yard watering, the HOA does. I don't have a lawn and have established flowers so it's a struggle on that front. I always report when the sprinklers are going too much on the common areas and always advocating to mow and do less. I moved to drip irrigation in the back so i'm only watering what needs to be watered and I can control it. I already only do full load of laundry and dishes.

What new insights did you gain about the skincare products you use? Did you reach out to advocate for refillable or recyclable packaging?

    Heather Reese's avatar
    Heather Reese 4/26/2024 10:13 AM
I did not know that palm oil was used in so many products. I already try to avoid it in my food products but this was a surprise. And oh those microplastics. Some of my products are already glass so it can be recycled and I try to refill products whenever possible but I need to look into other options as well.

I am always so surprised when I check the ingredients list on products especially palm oil!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Biodiversity + Wildlife Endangered Species
What endangered species did you learn about and what did you learn?

    Heather Reese's avatar
    Heather Reese 4/26/2024 10:07 AM
What was truly sad was the length of the list.. and that it's all man made destruction in one form or another. 160 in the last decade alone. None on the critically endangered list really surprised me except for the mountain gorillas and maybe the sea turtles.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
What did you learn about freshwater and oceans you did not already know? In sharing this information with people in your life, which conversation was impactful to you?

    Heather Reese's avatar
    Heather Reese 4/26/2024 9:57 AM
how much of it not protected, how much has been lost, and how much is in danger or polluted already. And it's not just in other less-developed countries. The biggest takeaway I suppose is how little time we really have to fix the problem.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Freshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-Free
Where did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?

    Heather Reese's avatar
    Heather Reese 4/26/2024 9:51 AM
Tea, gum, bottle caps surprised me. I think I knew that milk cartons, wet wipes, clothes and takeaway cups must have some and of course, most toiletries. I do what i can to not use plastic and when I have to get something new, I can look for the best alternative. Hopefully refills and better options will become more and more available. I have switched to glass storage containers over the years and that works well most of the time.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Volunteer in my Community
How does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?

    Heather Reese's avatar
    Heather Reese 4/24/2024 12:30 PM
It's nice to feel a part of the solution and knowing people care in this crazy world we are living in right now. It takes a village to really make things happen. I actually really like to volunteer when I travel. It's a good way to get to know what is happening around you.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Freshwater + Oceans Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Heather Reese's avatar
    Heather Reese 4/24/2024 12:27 PM
I think we forget here in the northwest that we still have water concerns and droughts and things. We don't get the rain and snow that we used to. I try to be aware of the water I use. I'd really like to see easier and more affordable grey water systems for every house to be used for plants. Even if you plant drought tolerant plants there are times they need the water.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Reduce Animal Products
How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Heather Reese's avatar
    Heather Reese 4/24/2024 12:24 PM
I think we all know the impact that meat has on the planet and ourselves but I definitely don't begrudge people who aren't ready to make that change. If you force people, I feel like it can backfire, so I generally try to lead by example but I'm definitely not fanatical about it but I do what I can and am always trying new recipes to find substitutes for the things I still like... <ahem> cheese.
