Save Water When Washing Dishes

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Enjoy a Meatless Meal

Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 1 meatless meals and/or 2 vegan meals each day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Produce No Waste for a Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 30

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

    Shamal Raut's avatar
    Shamal Raut 4/23/2025 1:56 AM

The challenge of eating less meat was both difficult and rewarding.

    Difficulties
    :

    1. Habit Change: Breaking long-standing dietary habits was tough.
    2. Finding Alternatives: Initially, it was hard to find satisfying plant-based options.
    3. Social Situations: Navigating meals at social gatherings where meat is prevalent.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
How was your experience intentionally trying to eat less meat?

    Shamal Raut 4/23/2025 1:54 AM
ntentionally trying to eat less meat was a transformative experience. It made me more mindful of my dietary choices and encouraged me to explore new plant-based recipes. I noticed improvements in my overall health and felt good about reducing my environmental impact.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money? What patterns did you notice in the food you threw away, and how can you address them?

    Shamal Raut's avatar
    Shamal Raut 4/23/2025 1:54 AM

It's surprising how much food waste can add up! If I had an extra $1,500, I'd rather use it for experiences like travel, education, or investing in sustainable living practices.

    Patterns in food waste
    :

    1. Expired Items: Food that goes bad before being used.
    2. Leftovers: Uneaten portions from meals.
    3. Overbuying: Purchasing more than needed.

    Shamal Raut's avatar
    Shamal Raut 4/23/2025 1:53 AM

Participating in a Zero Waste Day can be quite challenging! Here are some common difficulties people face:

    1. Avoiding Single-Use Items: Many everyday products, like food packaging and disposable utensils, are designed for single use. It requires a lot of planning to avoid them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

    Shamal Raut's avatar
    Shamal Raut 4/23/2025 1:53 AM
Changing my dishwashing habits, such as using a basin to wash dishes instead of running water continuously, made me more aware of how much water I was using. It highlighted the importance of conserving water and being mindful of our daily consumption.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
What did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?

    Shamal Raut's avatar
    Shamal Raut 4/23/2025 1:50 AM
