SUNIL's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Action Track: Community
Visit the Earth Day Celebration in the Agora
On Monday April 22 from 10:30-2:00pm, the Sustainability Office is hosting an Earth Day celebration! Come and learn about sustainability and climate action initiatives taking place at JAC and in the wider community. Take part in a workshop and pick up some seedlings or house plants!
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

SUNIL RAMGULAM 4/24/2024 1:34 PMLast week to go, amazing how when you take stock of the the little things you do, you can see the impact it can make on a bigger scale. Teaching my kids about eco-friendly choices and enpowering the next generation! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
SUNIL RAMGULAM 4/10/2024 2:20 PMOur compost is split between home garden use and city pick up. In Dorval we have great composting by the city and then they give away fee compost at the beginning of spring. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests 30 for 30 in NatureWhat have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?
SUNIL RAMGULAM 4/10/2024 2:18 PMHaving started a new job this week, these walks have been key. It gives that time for my brain to do nothing and just enjoy the lovely weather we have been having!-
Ivana Tough 4/11/2024 9:21 AMIt took you leaving to go for walks? Why won't you come with us :(

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Weekly Meal PlanningHow did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?
SUNIL RAMGULAM 4/05/2024 6:57 AMFor me I don't mind eating the same thing for multiple days so cooking in bulk and prepping meals is a great option. I even prep suppers as I am not home in the evenings so this helps my wife with the evening routine. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
SUNIL RAMGULAM 4/05/2024 6:55 AMIt is a relatively easy process as most stores don't offer bags anymore. The of Dorval even put an ban on single use bags last year.
