Visit or Learn About a Culturally Significant Site Near Me

Sites of cultural and spiritual significance hold deep meaning for many communities, particularly Indigenous peoples. I will learn about or visit a site near me that is significant to the history, culture, or environment of the area. I will approach my visit with respect by researching its importance and guidelines beforehand, reflecting on how we can preserve these spaces for future generations.

DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Learn the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace

Leave No Trace means enjoying nature responsibly by minimizing our impact and leaving the environment as we found it, or better. I will spend 20 minutes learning about the seven core principles to minimize my impact while enjoying the outdoors.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Empowering the Next Generation

Learn About Indigenous Conservation Practices

Indigenous communities have stewarded ecosystems for generations through deep-rooted knowledge and connection to nature. I will spend 20 minutes exploring Indigenous conservation methods and reflecting on their role in fostering balance and equity with nature.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
What did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?

I learned that there are some hotels that have sustainability certifications to inform you if they prioritize eco-friendly hotel stays. These hotels often put signs in the bathrooms telling you to reuse your towels, use eco-friendly soaps and shampoos, promote recycling, and have locally-sourced hotel meals. I can use this to look for eco-friendly hotels whenever I travel. I think my travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation by promoting organizations and governments to invest in biodiversity protection; the more people attracted by ecotourism, the more incentivized organizations will be to protect the environment.

What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

I was most surprised that coffee takes so much more water than tea when the whole process is taken into account! I was also surprised that polyester clothing takes up so much less water than cotton clothing. I have been prioritizing 100% cotton fabric because I thought it was more eco-friendly in terms of reducing fossil fuel dependency, so now I have to figure out how to balance the two.

To reduce my water footprint, I will time my showers. I would say I take reasonably short showers, but I want to time it to verify that this is the case and make sure that I am doing my part.

Happy Earth Day, everyone! A funny quote that always comes to mind this time of year is "Keep Earth clean, it's not Uranus!" Today, I tried to follow through with this quote by reducing my food waste and telling my peers about composting.

Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

Most of my carbon emissions come from travel because my family travels a lot during vacation time to see our relatives who live quite far away. To offset this, I plan to improve the other parts of my footprint: I will work towards reducing my food waste, be more efficient with my home's AC usage, and purchase more seasonal, locally grown food.

I found out the unfortunate truth of this deceptively colorful plant I have seen across highways in NC: wisteria, more specifically, an invasive type of wisteria (not the American wisteria), which is a poisonous purple flowering plant that is outcompeting native plant species. This highlights the importance of focusing on planting native plants in our gardens to prevent invasive species encroachments. Other than not planting them, what are other solutions you can think of when it comes to managing invasive species?

removing them - which can take a lot of effort - but may be the only solution. I would start with removal in dedicated preserves, parks, natural spaces, as it's most important to remove invasive species there. Members of your local master naturalist organization, master gardners, or native plant society would likely work on this.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money? What patterns did you notice in the food you threw away, and how can you address them?

I would instead use this money to efficiently distribute food to communities that lack sufficient access to nutritious food. While a large number of Americans waste food, there are also a large number of Americans who live in food deserts, which are areas that are not close to grocery stores with affordable, healthy food, causing them to purchase food that is far less nutritious.

I noticed that, in the food I threw away, it was often because I put too much on my plate. I have now started to think more about what I eat, so I have been taking smaller portions; you can always put more food on your plate later, but you cannot remove the food from your plate once it is on there. This strategy has been very effective in limiting my food waste and making me a more responsible consumer.

How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet? What fruits or vegetables did you try this week, and which was your favorite?

I became vegetarian last year, and it has helped me become more mindful of what I eat. I have started eating more fruits and thinking more about how the food I eat affects my body. While I still enjoy sweet treats, I moderate my consumption of them by grabbing a bowl of fruit instead.

This week, I had lots of eggplants, tomatoes, cantaloupes, honeydew melons, pineapples, potatoes, spinach, and snake gourd. I would say my favorite are eggplants because they taste great in both wet and dry curries with rice.

When it comes to the planet, it makes me feel good that we are all working towards reducing our carbon footprint by lowering meat consumption!

Exercising each day, whether that be by doing an aerobics workout or just going for a walk on campus, has boosted my mental well-being greatly; it has enabled me to take a step back from my work and consciously focus on my health and happiness. I have most enjoyed walking with my friends around campus because it has allowed me to not only get my physical activity for the day but also spend time with the people I love and explore new trails nearby.
