Miracles of Mother Nature--Indian Laburnum also known as "Bahawa" (also known as Shower of the forest/ Nature Indicator) is truly a magical tree. It is said that after this tree blooms it rains exactly after 60 days. This year Bahawa has blossomed pretty early in our city and we expect monsoons to arrive on 28th May 2022. Let us see whether this prediction comes out to be true :)

Popati is food dish with its unique preparation method; mainly found in the Raigad District of Konkan Region. Popati is prepared especially in the days of having good production of Flat Green Beans (WAL PAPADI) a local produce found in abundance in the months from December to April. This is a unique dish because there is no oil used, all vegetables are locally available, simply marinated with spices and rock salt and wrapped up in banana leaves/ green leaves from gardens. All the vegetables are placed in an earthen pot with a layer of banana leaves. The earthen pot is then placed in a ground pit  and is covered under dried leaves/ foliage and is fired up in open. 45 mins in the ground and all the marinated vegetables are cooked with the natural juices of banana leaves and all natural flavors soaked in. Truly an Indian BBQ with a twist--- no oil/ no ovens/ no electricity, Use whatever is locally available and enjoy a truly delicious savory dish!! Sharing a few pictures of this whole experience that I witnessed very recently. :)

Donated a few perfectly intact books, toys, clothes and Kids utility items to an orphanage in Pune. I realized that I was having all these perfectly fine items which my kids no longer use/ have outgrown. Sharing an extra toy/ book/ any appliance could be a great community building cause we all can take up.

  • Reflection Question
Health & Equity Spend Time Outside
What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

    Bakul Purohit's avatar
    Bakul Purohit 4/10/2022 10:48 PM
More time spent inside and on screens means less time out in fresh air. After all as the famous poem goes--"What is this life if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare :)". So, Take a break, spend some time outside to enjoy the nature and also towards community building.

What climate change and sustainability issues are most pressing where you live?

There is a huge amount of plastic usage . Some of it absolutely cannot be avoided , agreed, but definitely if we all take small steps to consciously reducing plastic where we can it would make a big difference. Other small observation is the use of paper rolls for customer acknowledgement copies at petrol pumps, shops etc when you make a payment. I have myself started opting out of customer acknowledgement receipts at retail stores, petrol pumps!

This is great suggestion about receipts , I personally have stopped accepting the Paper stubs for Credit cards expenses for many years now, as it is we get a Text Notifications on our mobiles.

Plastic is used very commonly in almost everything we purchase today be it Edible Oils, Drinking water, etc. My residential complex is  cluster of 12 Buildings with 500 plus households. Though we practice segregation of Wet & Dry waste we noticed that these plastic bottles, cans were getting dumped as dry waste. For the past one year we have now started collecting all this plastic waste separately on daily basis.  On  fortnightly basis all this waste is collected by a NGO and passed on for re-cycling.
  • Reflection Question
Health & Equity Track My Purchases
How have you reduced your purchasing habits and what would you like to do next to reduce your consumption habits?

    Bakul Purohit 4/07/2022 2:10 AM
Many a times things that we want are right in our houses. Just scrapping a perfectly intact utility item/ piece of clothing won't work. We all need to rethink whether a new purchase is indeed needed
  • Reflection Question
Education & Livelihood Share Your Eco Habits
How do you create new sustainability-related habits or change bad habits?

    Bakul Purohit's avatar
    Bakul Purohit 4/07/2022 2:08 AM
Behavioral change is hardest to achieve. It would be nice to get into a routine, do some things that are sustainable as a part of my daily routine and that way it becomes a habit
  • Reflection Question
Climate & Ecosystems Reduce Single-Use Plastics
What plastic or single-use items do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted?

    Bakul Purohit's avatar
    Bakul Purohit 4/04/2022 5:12 AM
I have substituted plastic bags with paper bags. I have cut down on single use plastic components.
