Action Track

Remove Invasive Species

Removing invasive species (species that are not naturally found in my area and can outcompete native plants) can help beautify nature around me and protect local biodiversity. I will learn about invasive plants in my area and, if possible, support or participate in at least one effort to beautify nature near me by removing invasive species.

Attracting Pollinators

I am going to plant species such as wild geranium and butterfly weed in my yard to support bees and butterflies.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Take the Pre-Survey

Take the Pre-Event Survey

I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Personal

Enjoy Fruits and Veggies

Eating a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables is a simple way to boost our personal health and support a more resilient food system. I will prepare and enjoy 4 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

What is resilience?

Learn About Ecological Resilience

Resilience is part of how nature works. I will spend 60 minutes learning about ecological resilience—how ecosystems adapt to disturbances and renew themselves through cycles of growth and renewal.

Discover How Communities Build Resilience

Every community around the world faces challenges—from natural disasters to economic changes—and find ways to adapt and thrive. I will spend 60 minutes exploring stories of community resilience and reflect on what lessons I can bring to my own community.

We take our food scraps and uneaten leftovers to our town's transfer station. They have compost bins to promote zero waste.

In the Gulfton neighborhood of Houston, Texas, residents are organizing to plant trees. Trees can lower pavement temperatures by up to 30 degrees F.

My favorite botanist lives in Texas, and he is always talking about this! He complains a lot that the city he lives in plants "horticultural atrocities" rather than native trees like the Mesquite. It always blows my mind how much he knows about the plants!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Action Track
What invasive species did you learn about in your area, and how do they impact native plants and wildlife? If you were able to support or partiicpate in an effort to remove invasive species, what did you do, and how it go?

We keep our domestic cat indoors. In this way, we are removing an invasive species from the environment.

Hello! I am off to my hometown of Pittsburgh today. Tomorrow, we will be visiting the National Aviary: https://www.aviary.org/. They work to save birds and protect their habitats.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    What is resilience?
What examples of resilience in ecosystems did you learn about? How do these cycles of renewal change the way you see nature around you?

Today, I learned about how the logpole pine forests in Yellowstone where able to grow back after a large fire. Now, when I see new trees growing among burnt remains, I can think about the resilience of nature.
