Martin's actions

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON

I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON

I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN

I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR

On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Personal Waste Audit

The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 5 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Biodiversity and Me

I will spend at least 5 minutes each day researching what biodiversity is, how biodiversity positively impacts our world, and how the loss of biodiversity harms it. I will share what I learn on the feed.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 5 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Personal Waste Audit
What are the results of your waste audit and what did you learn? How can you reduce your waste going forward?

    Martin Pross's avatar
    Martin Pross 4/30/2024 1:51 PM
The result is that we definitely produce too much waste, and it is increasing every year. It is difficult to really efficiently avoid waste because the manufacturing industry often offers no other option.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Martin Pross's avatar
    Martin Pross 4/30/2024 1:50 PM
Often you let the water flow unconsciously. It is necessary to be much more conscious with the resource by thinking about its use.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Explore My Area
Where did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?

    Martin Pross's avatar
    Martin Pross 4/30/2024 1:48 PM
In our surroundings, the vineyards and on the local mountain. It was relaxing and calming.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Calculate My Carbon Impact
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

    Martin Pross's avatar
    Martin Pross 4/30/2024 1:47 PM
Probably with the gas heating, which we will exchange for an alternative heating system as soon as possible.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Online Energy Audit
Where did you do an energy audit (work, home, school, other) and what did you learn?

    Martin Pross's avatar
    Martin Pross 4/30/2024 1:46 PM
I did it at home. I learned that it is possible to save a lot of energy if you think about it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Stay on the Ground
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

    Martin Pross's avatar
    Martin Pross 4/30/2024 1:45 PM
The process was simple and rational. By using train.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Invest in Nature
What did you learn about how investing can support the environment and create a more sustainable world?

    Martin Pross's avatar
    Martin Pross 4/30/2024 1:44 PM
Investments in general in alternative methods can be sustainable: energy, packaging, mobility, and much more...
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
What did you learn in the webinar? Did anything surprise you?

    Martin Pross's avatar
    Martin Pross 4/30/2024 8:00 AM
Serves our survival. No, I've seen a lot of reports and webinars that nothing really surprised me.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Join a Cleanup Effort
How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel? What results did you see? Please consider posting a photo of your cleanup!

    Martin Pross's avatar
    Martin Pross 4/30/2024 7:55 AM
This activity is fun but at the same time shocking when you see what people throw into the environment without thinking.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Volunteer in my Community
How does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?

    Martin Pross's avatar
    Martin Pross 4/30/2024 7:49 AM
Volunteering can make a huge difference and support and enrich the community. Especially in this area, it is not necessary to just do something in return for a service or something in return.
