Enola's actions
Wildlife
Try At Least One Principle of Leave No Trace
After learning about the Principles of Leave No Trace, I will take at least one action to minimize my impact on the outdoors while enjoying nature. I will post what I tried to the feed to encourage others to do the same!
Health and Well-Being
Declutter and Donate
Decluttering can reduce stress and benefit others. I will declutter my home and donate items I no longer need to support others in my community.
Community and Connection
Explore the Feed and Connect with Others
I will spend 5 minutes reading the Ecochallenge feed each day and giving high fives or commenting on posts by people who I don't know, but whose content inspires or interests me.
Land, Water, and Air
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Health and Well-Being
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Community and Connection
Attend a Local Event
Local events such as farmers' markets, festivals, or community meetings like town halls are great ways to feel part of a community. I will attend 2 community events to connect with others and learn more about my area.
Land, Water, and Air
Join a Cleanup Effort
Working together to clean up public spaces helps the environment and builds community. I will participate in 1 community cleanup efforts in my neighborhood or local area.
Community and Connection
Swap and Share with Others
Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 1 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Land, Water, and Air
Take Shorter Showers
Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!
Health and Well-Being
Audit Toxic Products in my Home
Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 20 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.
Wildlife
Learn the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace
Leave No Trace means enjoying nature responsibly by minimizing our impact and leaving the environment as we found it, or better. I will spend 15 minutes learning about the seven core principles to minimize my impact while enjoying the outdoors.
Wildlife
Learn to be a Responsible Tourist
Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 15 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat did you do to prepare for extreme weather events? Share any tips or resources you found helpful in the feed!
Enola Preston-Smith 4/25/2025 11:06 AMI prepared for extreme weather events by making sure my household first aid kit was stocked, made a plan with my family for events like an earthquake which is the most likely disaster to happen in my area, and made sure we had non perishables in our home in case we lose power or transportation for a long period of time. Talking to your household and making a good plan together I think is the best way to prepare. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat surprised you most about the products you use in your home?
Enola Preston-Smith 4/24/2025 4:49 PMI was not very surprised by the products in my home because my mom already tries to not have chemicals in our home, but some of the foods I looked into had a lot more additives than I had thought. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingHow did decluttering and donating items make you feel, both emotionally and physically?
Enola Preston-Smith 4/24/2025 4:02 PMDecluttering my home felt very freeing, it sparked joy in me, and made me feel very organized. Donating was nice but I know from my lessons in class that donating doesn't always send your items to a good place, so I hope my items don't get thrown away. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?
Enola Preston-Smith 4/24/2025 9:50 AMI can be more conscious while traveling by making sure I avoid interfering with local wildlife and I only support conservation list animal attractions. These will benefit wildlife because I will leave it alone and support it by contributing to groups that protect it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow did your experience go in trying an action to Leave No Trace? Did you notice others doing the same, or not? From a perspective of having empathy for others, why might people not adhere to the Leave No Trace principles?
Enola Preston-Smith 4/24/2025 9:32 AMIn my experience I enjoy finding things like cool rocks and exploring off the trail which I have learned is two no's of Leave No Trace so that is what I decided to implement. I can understand why people do not adhere to Leave No Trace because it is really fun to collect items from nature, or make rock stacks, but I know it is for the better of the ecosystem so I will keep to the rules of Leave No Trace. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat is one way you can reduce your impact on nature the next time you spend time outdoors, and how might that action help preserve the environment for others?
Enola Preston-Smith 4/22/2025 4:37 PMThe next time I go out into nature I can avoid going off trail in order to prevent habitat damage and disturbing the animals that live there.-

As a person who has volunteered with scouts over many years, we had a mantra of "leave it better than how you found it" Everyone would pick up at least 10 items of trash during any outdoor / nature adventure.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionWho inspired you on the feed, and why? Did you meet anyone new, learn anything exciting, or discover a new perspective?
Enola Preston-Smith 4/22/2025 4:21 PMI was inspired by someone who wrote about bird watching over Easter. I would love to be more attentive to my surroundings and nature, and feel more connected to the living creatures around me.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionWhat did you enjoy or learn from attending a local event in your community? How did participating in this event deepen your connection to your local area?
Enola Preston-Smith 4/22/2025 3:40 PMI attended local farmers markets which exposed me to local business owners and artists which I am interested in. My connection with my local area was deeped because I became more aware of those in my community and want to support them more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Enola Preston-Smith 4/22/2025 3:34 PMI participated in a community swap meet, everyone brought a few items, we drew numbers and browsed eachother's items. Anything not picked by anyone went to donation. This was super fun and helpful because it was an opportunity to declutter but also refresh my clothes and items. I think it also helps to bring communities closer together by sharing items.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirWhat was the most unexpected piece of trash that was picked up during your local cleanup effort? How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Enola Preston-Smith 4/22/2025 10:31 AMI was most surprised to find a full car bumper during the clean-up. Working with others in my community was very enjoyable because it really felt like we were making a difference for ourselves.
