Hayden's actions
Personal
Meditate
Meditation helps build resilience and clarity. I will spend 60 minutes each day to meditate or create a moment of silence each day to reflect on things important to me.
Community
Connect with Someone
Strong communities are built on connection and trust. I will reach out to 3 others—friends, colleagues, or neighbors—to check in, have a meaningful conversation, offer support, or to meet someone new near me.
Soil and Food
Grow Something to Eat
Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.
Soil and Food
Enjoy a Meatless Meal
Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 2 meatless meals meals each day.
What is resilience?
Explore Resilience in Nature
Resilience is all around us in the natural world. I will spend 30 minutes outdoors looking for examples of resilience—such as plants regrowing, animals adapting, or seasonal cycles—and reflect on what they teach about thriving through change.
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Mulching helps soil hold water and reduces runoff. I will mulch the base of trees or other plants at home, school, or in my community to improve water retention and soil health.
Personal
Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep
Good sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind. I will prioritize getting 60 minutes of quality sleep each night and develop a bedtime routine that supports rest and relaxation.
Community
Host a Gathering
Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat did you notice about how mulching helps the soil and plants? How does this small action connect to bigger ideas of water resilience?
Hayden Powers 4/20/2026 6:09 PMBig gardening day Saturday (4/18), I spent time with my mom planting or refreshing some bushes and trees in our back yard with mulch, getting our backyard ready for the good weather. I love smelling a fresh garden and how vibrant plants look sitting in fresh mulch. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat was the most rewarding part of bringing people together for a gathering? Did you experience any challenges in hosting, and if so, how did you overcome them?
Hayden Powers 4/20/2026 6:00 PMAfter much talk of doing one of my hobbies with other people, my friends and I decided to get together and make jewelry outdoors on a sunny day. It felt good to give myself time for an activity Id been wanting to do but struggled designated time towards. It was also exciting to see my friends enjoy doing an activity that I also have interest in. It was a huge plus having some time to appreciate the pleasant weather- would absolutely do this again.-

Sounds like the perfect day honestly! I know how difficult it can be to get a friend group to come together due to scheduling issues. It's so rewarding setting something up and people truly enjoying the activity you picked. Great job!

REFLECTION QUESTIONSoil and FoodWhat did you decide to grow, and how did it feel to start (or care for) your plants? What connections did it give you to soil or food resilience?
Hayden Powers 4/20/2026 5:52 PMTrying a small herb garden/collection. I imagine it’ll be a good encouragement to cook more!-
Kerry Keck 4/20/2026 8:46 PMOver the last couple years I have discovered that herbs are easier to keep if you can dedicate the space (on a balcony or yard) to putting them in larger pots. I never succeeded with them before because the small pots they come in dry out between leaving for work and getting home. We are now having a steady supply of herbs to flavor our food. -

I've never had luck with a herb garden but I have been able to maintain single pots of my favourite herbs on my kitchen window sill. Good luck!
