Ketaki's actions

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

Freshwater + Oceans Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Ketaki Pilare 4/05/2024 6:18 AM

In India, fish consumption has grown significantly, with a per capita yearly consumption of over 13 kg in 2022-23. However, it’s still below the international standard of 20.5 kg per capita1. Here’s what you can do:
Choose Wisely: Opt for smaller fish, which are less likely to contain high levels of toxins.
Limit Intake: Be mindful of your fish consumption to stay within safe limits.
Stay Informed: Keep an eye on local advisories and guidelines for specific regions23.

Remember, informed choices lead to a healthier you! 🐟🌿
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Ketaki Pilare's avatar
    Ketaki Pilare 4/05/2024 6:07 AM
    1. Water Footprint:
      • Imagine every drop of water you use—whether for drinking, showering, or washing dishes. That’s your water footprint.
      • It’s like leaving little wet footprints behind as you go about your day.
    2. Reducing Your Water Use:
      • Be mindful of how much water you splash around.
      • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth (no need for a mini waterfall!).
      • Fix leaky faucets—they’re like tiny water thieves.
      • And hey, maybe take shorter showers. Your water footprint will thank you! 🚿💧
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

    Ketaki Pilare's avatar
    Ketaki Pilare 4/05/2024 6:05 AM
    1. Cleaning Products and Our Waterways:
      • Ever wonder what happens after we scrub our floors or wash dishes? Well, those cleaning products don’t just vanish—they end up in our water.
      • Ingredients like phosphorus and nitrogen sneak into rivers and lakes. These nutrients might sound harmless, but they’re like overzealous plant food. Too much of it leads to algae parties in the water. 🌊🌱
      • Algae blooms may seem like a green celebration, but they’re not. They hog all the oxygen, leaving fish and other aquatic creatures gasping for breath. Not a great party vibe for them! 😓
    2. DIY Cleaning Potions:
      • Instead of store-bought potions, why not brew your own? It’s like being a magical eco-warrior!
      • Grab some vinegar, sprinkle in some baking soda, and add a dash of essential oils. Voilà! You’ve got a homemade cleaner that won’t harm the planet. 🌿✨

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Low Water Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

    Ketaki Pilare's avatar
    Ketaki Pilare 4/05/2024 1:35 AM
    1. Drought: Area faces severe water scarcity due to insufficient rainfall. This leads to wells drying up and affects farming and daily life.
    2. Flooding: Heavy rains can cause floods, damaging homes, crops, and infrastructure. Coastal areas are especially vulnerable.
    3. Pollution: Water pollution from industries and waste affects rivers and lakes, making the water unsafe for drinking and harming aquatic life.
    4. Access: Not everyone has easy access to clean water. Some areas struggle with inadequate water supply for basic needs.
    5. Security: Ensuring water availability and safety is crucial for everyone. Water disputes can arise between regions or communities.
    6. Privatization: Balancing public access and private interests in managing water resources is a challenge.
