Climate + Air
Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 120 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 15 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 4 hours in my community.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Jeremy Phillips 4/26/2024 1:49 PMI've been taking an opportunity this month to try new places on a daily walk, just to get outside and see new things. Definitely nice seeing some interesting plants/animals and feeling more removed from the city. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Personal Waste AuditWhat are the results of your waste audit and what did you learn? How can you reduce your waste going forward?
Jeremy Phillips 4/26/2024 1:48 PMReviewing my waste really shows a few things:
- buying in bulk can reduce waste
- reusable items can help a lot (using bags/bottles, storage containers for leftovers, etc).
I also found how much you can mentally remove yourself from the waste (such as a package being several servings, but still creating waste - you don't technically create the waste each day but if you don't think it through you'll still create the same amount of waste). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Jeremy Phillips 4/03/2024 2:44 PMThere are big sources in all categories - seems like some simple changes like reduction in meat consumption and reduction of purchasing where possible would go a long way.-
Fernando Terra 4/11/2024 9:59 AMThe impact of reducing meat consumption was impressive to me, in both carbon and water footprints. I believe it can also have a positive impact changing the sources of the meat we consume, and making sure those are the most sustainable options available. -
Robert Buchanan 4/03/2024 2:50 PMDriving is the biggest factor for carbon emissions in my life. Lately I have been trying to make it a rule of thumb to not drive anywhere that I can easily bike or walk to.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Jeremy Phillips 4/01/2024 1:00 PMDenver changing to no longer allow for plastic bags at stores at the start of 2024 has made this much easier, as we've been getting used to carrying bags for a while now. I still forget them once in a while, but overall I go in with a bag.-
Fernando Terra 4/11/2024 10:13 AMMost supermarkets here in my region have used cardboard boxes available in case people forget to bring a bag, that is really helpful and a better option against plastic bags.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Jeremy Phillips 4/01/2024 12:18 PMI try to use a cup for water at my desk each day, and a metal bottle when I go to the office (for more portability). I need to do a better job of doing this outside of work, but that's a goal for this month. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Declutter My Home Without the LandfillHow did it feel to intentionally declutter with putting things into the landfill? What did you learn along the way about yourself and our consumer and waste systems?
Jeremy Phillips 4/01/2024 10:32 AMOne item I'm going to try from one of the articles is to set out four boxes/stations on items in a room to declutter - one for recycle, one for keep, one for trash and one for relocate. This should help figure out what actually gets used. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Jeremy Phillips 4/01/2024 9:20 AMIt's interesting seeing how much a few changes would make - such as eating meat for one meal fewer a day or shopping mostly for basics as well as reviewing what I buy for their sustainability efforts.
