A native plant I researched was native tree species. It looks like Oaks, Maples, and Hickory trees are actually native species in our area. They play a role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by storing carbon dioxide, and improving water quality.

In addition to the carbon capture you mention, trees are host plants (i.e. the plant that larval caterpillars can eat) for butterflies and moths, both of which are excellent pollinators. Oaks are the best, hosting over 500 species; maple are next, hosting over 280 species; hickory host an unknown number.
