Vikraman's actions

Health and Well-Being

Audit Toxic Products in my Home

Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 10 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

Collect Rain Water

Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports gardens. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for 10 outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Take Shorter Showers

Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Conduct a Home Energy Audit

Reducing energy use helps protect the air and climate. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy and reduce pollution.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Learn About Water Justice

Access to clean water is a basic right, yet not everyone has it. I will spend 10 minutes learning about water justice issues and who is affected.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep

Good sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind. I will prioritize getting 300 minutes of quality sleep each night and develop a bedtime routine that supports rest and relaxation.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 28

Replace Old Bulbs with LED Bulbs

Energy-efficient lighting is a bright idea. I will replace 10 incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Prepare for Extreme Weather

Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.

Advocate For Better Food Packaging

When companies and governments make large-scale changes to their products and practices, it makes sustainability more accessible to the masses, in turn creating further demand for sustainable products, and the cycle continues. I will advocate for improved, sustainable food packaging through petitions, letters, or by supporting brands that prioritize eco-friendly packaging - and share my advocacy actions on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Learn to be a Responsible Tourist

Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 10 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.

COMPLETED

Pollinators like bees play a crucial role in ecosystems. With each visit to a flower, they help plants reproduce, sustaining the web of life that feeds and nurtures our planet..

    Ecological Roles of House Sparrows:
Prey: They are a food source for various predators, contributing to the food web.
Seed Dispersal: By consuming fruits and seeds, they help distribute plant life.
Insect Control: They eat insects, especially when feeding their young, which can help regulate insect populations.
Bioindicator (Urban): Their population trends in cities can sometimes reflect the health of the urban environment.
Nutrient Cycling (Minor): Their droppings contribute minimally to local nutrient cycles.

Given their ecological roles and the concerning declines observed in many regions, it's important to take action to help save sparrows, offer them a safe place to live, food and water, and try to keep their environment healthy. Even small actions can make a big difference!!

    Cut Straight, Not Waste!!!

By making a linear cut across the top of the milk pocket instead of the traditional corner slit, you would indeed avoid creating that small, detached triangular piece of plastic.
This small piece is often a nuisance.
    It can:
    • Become litter easily: It's lightweight and can blow away.
    • Be difficult to collect and dispose of properly: Its small size makes it easy to lose.
    • Potentially be ingested by animals: Mistaking it for food.
A linear cut would keep the cut portion attached to the main body of the pocket, making it much less likely to become stray litter. You'd simply have a flap that's still connected.
This small change in design could have a positive impact if widely adopted. Think about the sheer number of milk pockets used daily. Eliminating that tiny piece of waste from each one would add up significantly over time, reducing plastic pollution. It's a great example of how even seemingly minor design tweaks in everyday products can contribute to more sustainable practices.

Absolutely agree! It's such a simple shift, but the impact could be huge. Small design changes like this really do add up less litter, safer for wildlife, and more sustainable overall. Love the thinking behind this!

Let’s give back the milk pack !
We all know that the milk pack that we drop into our dustbin never gets destroyed? Every day, millions of milk packs go into our landfills, which then stay in our soil, drains, lakes, and rivers forever. Some of them even end up in the stomachs of cows and other animals, causing them serious harm.
So, let’s break this cycle. One of the milk service providers took this initiative, and i made a promise to give back the used milk packs (of milk and other products) to our milk delivery partner, and they will get recycled and converted into something useful.

    We can make a difference.
A SIMPLE STEP ON YOUR PART CAN HELP RECYCLE THIS PACKAGING WASTE AND CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS PROTECTING THE FUTURE OF OUR CHILDREN.
    Let’s do some good. Together
