This weekend was great, but we had 28 degrees, heavy rains and hailstones and then 8 deegrees in the span of 24hrs. Weather this April is not my favorite.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
What did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?

This is quite the paradox. Overtoursim is one of the biggest problems ecosystems face, so I would like to remove all tourists from my favourite places while I can still do it. I bet many others think the same. I choose to focus on conservation and how I can contribute to it. I absolutely avoid overcrowded places and I never support the tourism which relies on exploitation of any animals, domesticated or wild.

Exploring new areas made me realize how fast and how much Cluj is growing. It’s shocking to see how far and wide the new neighborhoods go… and it’s not always great, especially when they are literally expanding into the woods

Not in this year's clean up, but as we go to the woods often, we found on different occasions a pile of dismembered dolls, a fridge, the case of an old TV and jars with pickles. It is disheartening to realize people go out of their way to throw their garbage in the middle of nowhere. Also, I always have mixed feelings about clean up efforts. I would like more to be invested in prevention than clean ups.

The hardest part about any type of emergency is dealing with the pets. Access to food for them could be a real problem so I always stock up. Also, the “dogs car” is always with a full tank. Any evacuation route must involve moving anywhere with 4 dogs (2 seniors) and one cat. Not an easy feat. The safest part is that this wasn’t even an exercise for me, I started thinking about this when the war in Ukraine started

Maria, we have an UPS, but I think some more traditional sources like a generator would be a good back up option.

Thank you Simona - that was not an aspect we had considered
We have quite independent tom cats - so they may flourish (!!) - but the need to evacuate for any reason is interesting

      On a different theme
Until recently we were looking after my elderly parents at our home long term. They had lots of increasingly complex needs. One thing I did manage to find out was that our utility companies and our local council allowed you me to register their priority needs. So in the event of problems (the theory was) they would try and liaise, support if possible or at least communicate what was happening

I agree with you about the difficulties of evacuating pets! Even handling an extended power outage is challenging. One of our senior pets has medication that needs to be kept cool, and there was so much demand for ice after Hurricane Beryl last summer that I had a hard time each day locating enough for the cooler we were using. A generator that was advertised as being adequate to power a small refrigerator turned out to not be up to the task. We're better prepared now.
