Owen's actions
Land, Water, and Air
Collect Rain Water
Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports gardens. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for 3 outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.
Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species that all play an important role in nature. I will spend 30 minutes learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Wildlife
Learn to be a Responsible Tourist
Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 60 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.
Health and Well-Being
Meditate
Meditation helps build resilience and clarity. I will spend 30 minutes each day to meditate or create a moment of silence each day to reflect on things important to me.
Health and Well-Being
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Health and Well-Being
Replace a Product
Small changes can make a big difference for health and sustainability. Using what I learned from auditing ingredients in the products I use, I will replace 4 toxic or harmful products I use with safer, eco-friendly alternatives.
Sustainable Innovation
Replace Old Bulbs with LED Bulbs
Energy-efficient lighting is a bright idea. I will replace 2 incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Sustainable Innovation
Learn about Regenerative Agriculture
Healthy soil, healthy planet. I will spend 30 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and how it helps restore ecosystems, improve soil health, and combat climate change.
Sustainable Innovation
Support a Crowdfunded Sustainability Innovation
Small contributions can drive big ideas. I will support a crowdfunded sustainability project to help bring innovative, eco-friendly solutions to life and share the project on social media or on the Ecochallenge feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Produce No Waste for a Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationWhat sustainability project did you support, and why did it resonate with you?
Owen Oswald 4/30/2025 9:05 PMI supported a local initiative to reduce food waste in my community. It resonated with me because it directly addressed an issue I saw firsthand: the significant amount of food being thrown away at our school, contributing to both environmental harm and social injustice. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationHow did replacing old bulbs with LED bulbs make you feel about reducing your energy consumption? What other small energy-saving actions could you take to reduce your environmental impact?
Owen Oswald 4/30/2025 9:04 PMReplacing old light bulbs with LEDs made me more conscious of my energy consumption and motivated me to take other steps to reduce my environmental impact. Beyond LEDs, small actions like turning off lights, using smart power strips, and adjusting thermostats are how I can help out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationWhat did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?
Owen Oswald 4/30/2025 8:45 PMI learned that regenerative agriculture focuses on improving soil health, restoring biodiversity, and enhancing ecosystem services to create sustainable food systems. You can support healthy farming practices by spreading awareness and buying healthy farmed foods. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat did you do to prepare for extreme weather events? Share any tips or resources you found helpful in the feed!
Owen Oswald 4/28/2025 1:02 PMI went over the proper evacuation strategy with my family if a disaster were to strike. We went over our evacuation routes at my house. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat product did you replace, and why was it important to you? How do you feel about making a small change for a healthier, more sustainable home?
Owen Oswald 4/28/2025 12:59 PMIn my brother's room, I replaced his former light bulbs with LED lights due to their long-term benefits. This switch is important because it saves energy and lasts much longer. I think making this change is important because it saves money on electricity bills. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat did you notice about your thoughts or emotions during or after meditation? Did you find it easy or challenging to meditate?
Owen Oswald 4/28/2025 12:48 PMI noticed that both during and after I meditate, I feel calmer and have less anxiety. I also feel the stress of school and other factors float away when I meditate. I thought it was a pretty easy challenge because I had already meditated from time to time before I knew about this challenge. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?
Owen Oswald 4/27/2025 6:15 PMI learned about how tourism impacts wildlife negatively through habitat destruction and disturbances. One way to make more conscious choices when planning a trip is by choosing eco-friendly tour options. My efforts can help minimize negative impacts on wildlife and their habitats by using these choices. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Owen Oswald 4/27/2025 6:08 PMThis challenge was difficult for me because I had to remember my reusable bag, but overall, this is a very simple and easy fix to the plastic bag landfill problem. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat native species did you learn about in your area, and how do they contribute to your local ecosystem or community? How might your community change if these native species disappeared?
Owen Oswald 4/27/2025 5:48 PMThe California Buckeye Tree is a native species in the San Diego region, and it contributes to my community by providing habitat, food, and other ecological services. If the California Buckeye Tree were to become extinct, there would be a decrease in biodiversity, it would impact pollinators and other native species in San Diego.-

- 15-DAY STREAK
Didn't know that there was a California Buckeye tree. I wonder if it's similar to the ones I grew up with in Ohio.
