Owen's actions

Land, Water, and Air

Collect Rain Water

Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports gardens. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for 3 outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Learn about Native Species

The world is full of unique species that all play an important role in nature. I will spend 30 minutes learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Wildlife

Learn to be a Responsible Tourist

Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 60 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Meditate

Meditation helps build resilience and clarity. I will spend 30 minutes each day to meditate or create a moment of silence each day to reflect on things important to me.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Prepare for Extreme Weather

Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Replace a Product

Small changes can make a big difference for health and sustainability. Using what I learned from auditing ingredients in the products I use, I will replace 4 toxic or harmful products I use with safer, eco-friendly alternatives.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sustainable Innovation

Replace Old Bulbs with LED Bulbs

Energy-efficient lighting is a bright idea. I will replace 2 incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sustainable Innovation

Learn about Regenerative Agriculture

Healthy soil, healthy planet. I will spend 30 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and how it helps restore ecosystems, improve soil health, and combat climate change.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Sustainable Innovation

Support a Crowdfunded Sustainability Innovation

Small contributions can drive big ideas. I will support a crowdfunded sustainability project to help bring innovative, eco-friendly solutions to life and share the project on social media or on the Ecochallenge feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Produce No Waste for a Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Sustainable Innovation
What sustainability project did you support, and why did it resonate with you?

    Owen Oswald's avatar
    Owen Oswald 4/30/2025 9:05 PM
I supported a local initiative to reduce food waste in my community. It resonated with me because it directly addressed an issue I saw firsthand: the significant amount of food being thrown away at our school, contributing to both environmental harm and social injustice.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Sustainable Innovation
How did replacing old bulbs with LED bulbs make you feel about reducing your energy consumption? What other small energy-saving actions could you take to reduce your environmental impact?

    Owen Oswald's avatar
    Owen Oswald 4/30/2025 9:04 PM
Replacing old light bulbs with LEDs made me more conscious of my energy consumption and motivated me to take other steps to reduce my environmental impact. Beyond LEDs, small actions like turning off lights, using smart power strips, and adjusting thermostats are how I can help out.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Sustainable Innovation
What did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?

    Owen Oswald's avatar
    Owen Oswald 4/30/2025 8:45 PM
I learned that regenerative agriculture focuses on improving soil health, restoring biodiversity, and enhancing ecosystem services to create sustainable food systems. You can support healthy farming practices by spreading awareness and buying healthy farmed foods.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

    Owen Oswald 4/28/2025 12:59 PM
In my brother's room, I replaced his former light bulbs with LED lights due to their long-term benefits. This switch is important because it saves energy and lasts much longer. I think making this change is important because it saves money on electricity bills.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Well-Being
What did you notice about your thoughts or emotions during or after meditation? Did you find it easy or challenging to meditate?

    Owen Oswald's avatar
    Owen Oswald 4/28/2025 12:48 PM
I noticed that both during and after I meditate, I feel calmer and have less anxiety. I also feel the stress of school and other factors float away when I meditate. I thought it was a pretty easy challenge because I had already meditated from time to time before I knew about this challenge.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
What did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?

    Owen Oswald's avatar
    Owen Oswald 4/27/2025 6:15 PM
I learned about how tourism impacts wildlife negatively through habitat destruction and disturbances. One way to make more conscious choices when planning a trip is by choosing eco-friendly tour options. My efforts can help minimize negative impacts on wildlife and their habitats by using these choices.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

    Owen Oswald's avatar
    Owen Oswald 4/27/2025 6:08 PM
This challenge was difficult for me because I had to remember my reusable bag, but overall, this is a very simple and easy fix to the plastic bag landfill problem.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
What native species did you learn about in your area, and how do they contribute to your local ecosystem or community? How might your community change if these native species disappeared?

    Owen Oswald's avatar
    Owen Oswald 4/27/2025 5:48 PM
The California Buckeye Tree is a native species in the San Diego region, and it contributes to my community by providing habitat, food, and other ecological services. If the California Buckeye Tree were to become extinct, there would be a decrease in biodiversity, it would impact pollinators and other native species in San Diego.
