Tyler's actions

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 10 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Biodiversity and Me

I will spend at least 15 minutes each day researching what biodiversity is, how biodiversity positively impacts our world, and how the loss of biodiversity harms it. I will share what I learn on the feed.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Endangered Species

Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 15 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I am enjoying learning about new species of life and have increased my knowledge on what we can do better to help sustain this earth.

Imagine, if you will, a world without condors soaring above the Arizona Desert. This could very well be a reality if we don’t change habits regarding egg collecting, lead poisoning, habitat degradation, and hunting. The California Condor does not reproduce often, laying a single egg once every other year. As such, we must be conscious when interacting with the Southwest ecosystem, to ensure we do not threaten to snuff out this iconic bird. The Arizona Game and Fish Department is tracking the California Condor count and is aiming to move this bird from endangered to threatened state, but it will take our efforts to ensure we live in a harmonious relationship with nature.

By finding innovative ways to accomplish work with teams that are geographically distant, a high quantity of carbon emissions have been avoided. These innovative ways involve small talk, a focus on the common goal, and a clear agenda that we stick to in our meetings.

How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

I borrow camping supplies from individuals who go camping fairly frequently, which increases community and reduces the need for additional camping supply production.

Volunteering with sunday school helps kids with social skills, reinforces positive behavior, and allows the parents to take some much needed time off. It also teaches patience and coaching skills. Overall, I have enjoyed my time volunteering with sunday school!

Biodiversity + Wildlife Biodiversity and Me
What did you learn about biodiversity and how are you connected to it through everyday actions?

Biodiversity can be defined as the existence of difference in makeup of life of all shapes and sizes, from components that make up the individual living organisms within an ecosystem, to ecosystem-ecosystem interactions. Expressed another way, it’s the recognizance of the role culture plays into maintaining the stable state of nature, and how all living organisms interact with each other on the micro and macroscopic level.

Biodiversity is important for a variety of factors, including both sentimental and functional. It provides a “feel-good” emotion to those who want to steward the environment as part of their passions; and it provides a base level of sustainability and longer dwell time for living organisms when environmentally sustainable efforts are successful.

Biodiversity can be threatened by non-sustainable foresting, land development, climate change, habitat loss, and introducing new species into self-sustaining ecosystems. We can mitigate this harm as humans by making a conscious effort to perform sustainable harvesting, avoiding high-quantity carbon emissions activities, and carefully regulating the introduction of species into ecosystems.

Freshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water Bottle
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

    Tyler Ostapuk's avatar
    Tyler Ostapuk 4/02/2024 11:00 AM
The amount of plastic we consume is pretty insane. Filling up a 32oz water bottle eliminates the need for most of the water I consume on a daily basis. It also leads to decreased costs as I am not buying water every week.

How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Tyler Ostapuk's avatar
    Tyler Ostapuk 4/02/2024 10:59 AM
In order to maximize water efficiency, I fill up the sink with water and then rinse the dishes in one sink, and cleaning them in the next. this conserves water and is more environmentally friendly during times of drought.

How did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?

    Tyler Ostapuk's avatar
    Tyler Ostapuk 4/02/2024 10:57 AM
It feels great to plan my own meals, for starters it is cheaper than fast food, and often healthier. As a result, the brain is more nourished leading to a happier, healthier, lifestyle.
