This was an inspiring weekend for me, Earth-wise. On Saturday I cleared litter with lots of people along the riverside path of the major river in our community. In the small section where I was, there were 60 people participating:) The next day, our church held a touching, wonderful service in honor of the Earth, followed by a Climate Cafe. It was open to the public and was a chance for people to learn about practical things they can do to lessen their carbon footprint and snack on Earth friendlier foods. I learned some valuable information. It was all a lot of work, but extremely rewarding and heart warming. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirWhat was the most unexpected piece of trash that was picked up during your local cleanup effort? How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Christine O'Neill 4/28/2025 9:21 AMI'm not sure what the most unexpected piece of trash was since our group was cleaning up along a riverside path. This event happens every year and we've pretty much seen it all before! As always, it was a treat to work with some wonderful people, especially including employees from our commonwealth's Department and Recreation. It's wonderful and heartening to see people working together on something as practical as removing litter, and all the more so given the April showers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionHow did expressing gratitude or performing acts of kindness impact you and the recipient? Did anything surprise you about your experience?

I found it challenging to think of meaningful ways to be extra kind or show appreciation. I finally read one of the learn more links to the Random Acts of Kindness organization and given the things that they suggest I am already doing many of these things. So, perhaps I should have marked this action item as 'I already do this.' However, it is nice to adopt this as a challenge in order to think about new ways to be kind. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat motivated you to schedule or attend your check-up, and how did it make you feel afterward that you completed this action?

I felt motivated to follow through with the recommendations my doctor made regarding nutrition and exercise. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat project or organization did you choose to support, and why did it resonate with you? What are some ways you can continue to support wildlife conservation beyond financial contributions?

I gave money to a program protecting cranes in Rwanda. What excited me most about their work is the great effort they are making to develop their tree nursery and to get people to take care of those trees once they are transplanted to their permanent location.
I generally support wildlife cnservation by improving habitat locally with others at a land trust-

You can find the links to the calculators for carbon and water footprints at the section of the platform for https://earthmonth.ecochallenge.org/dashboards/challenges/land-water-and-air There is one challenge to calculate your carbon footprint with links to several different, simple, online tools. Calculate your water footprint is a separate goal and there is information on making that calculation in the Learn More section. I hope you dins them useful, Shahana. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirWhat surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

We are pretty water conscious in our house and I am excited to have learned about a couple of things that could help us save water. They are potentially the Altered:Nozzle which has a spray option for hand washing at a sink as well as a regular low-flow stream, perhaps a composting toilet and diverting washing machine water to irrigation uses. That's pretty exciting because we are about to make repairs to our bathroom. It's sobering to see how much water goes into even foods like pasta! -

I'm reporting on the one time action of calculating my carbon footprint and deciding what actions to take to shrink it. I used the three calculators given as resources and find that my footprint is somewhere between 0.5 and 1 times what a typical American has but it is still a lot bigger than what we need to do to protect our ecosytems and climate. It's hard to figure out what to do and as usual, it's easier to see what someone else can do! So for the moment I'm considering offsetting 2 long trip flights my husband is taking this year. I'll mull over actions for me some more over the week to come.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionHow did keeping your community more clean connect you more to your local area? Did picking up litter change your perspective on the cleanliness of your community?
Christine O'Neill 4/01/2025 5:35 PM- Book Lover 📚
While walking along the sidewalk in my town collecting litter, another pedestrian out with her toddler talked to me about picking up litter. She doesn't know of anyone that does this unless it's part of an organized group. Well, I know that I am not the only one in my community who picks up litter independently, but now she knows one of us who does this. It was another opportunity to create a connection in our community which made me feel good.
