Biodiversity + Wildlife
Reduce Animal Products
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 3 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

Marc Nitz 4/24/2024 6:21 PMCame by the park today near our house and found trash all around the trash bin. Took me less than 2 minutes to put everything inside. Here's before and after photos. Is it asking too much of people to put your crap in the trashcan?-
Shelley Pinckney 4/24/2024 8:12 PMI agree with you. Thank you for cleaning up this area. 👍 -

Marc Nitz 4/24/2024 6:16 PMSuper happy today! Where I clean up my local beachfront viewpoint in Newport Beach, CA, I kept finding cigarette butts on the ground near a bench. I contacted the City of Newport Beach Public Works department to see if they could put in an ashtray, but they said it was illegal to smoke there and if they put ashtrays in place, it would be promoting smoking. Argh! So, I posted a photo of the cigarette butts on the Next Door app and the community responded. Many people suggested putting a metal coffee can with a note saying to put the butts inside. Honestly, I thought the can would be kicked off the hill, but it worked!!! I came back today and the can was filled! Again, I'm so happy!!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Marc Nitz 4/24/2024 6:10 PMWhy can't bicyclists hold onto their packaging after they are done eating and drinking? I have found so much debris along Dover Drive in Newport Beach, CA from bicyclists. I keep seeing the same energy bar wrappers and purple bottles of "Feel Free" health supplement bottles every weekend in the flowerbed adjacent to the bike path. -
Marc Nitz 4/24/2024 6:07 PMFound a biohazard bag on the beach today. Yikes! Thankfully, it wasn't filled up with anything. Found a beanbag and lots of health supplement bottles where bicyclists ride their bikes.-

Marc Nitz 4/24/2024 6:05 PMMore and more trash picked up on Sunday in the neighborhood. I actually had a couple people say "Thank you" to me on the beach today which was very nice of them. Lots of fishing line today, some clothes, a metal pipe, and some birds came out to greet me. I'll be back next weekend.

Marc Nitz 4/24/2024 6:01 PMPicked up a ton of trash today at the local beach near our house. Unfortunately, this Ecochallenge page only allows you note 100 pieces of trash picked up or fewer, but I easily had over 200 pieces of trash (cigarette butts, large wood pieces, bottles, aluminum cans, stryofoam bits, pens, bags, rubber balls, etc.). -
Marc Nitz 4/24/2024 5:52 PMFound two bicycles stashed in the bushes a few blocks from my house. I phoned the police to report the bicycles. I have no idea how long they've been here, but it was nice to find them and hopefully some kids will be reunited with their stuff. -
Marc Nitz 4/24/2024 5:46 PMPicked up 88 pieces of litter over the weekend of April 1 as part of my weekend walk in my neighborhood and nearby beach.
