Matilda's actions
Community and Connection
Meet My Neighbors
Strong neighborhoods are built on connection and trust. I will introduce myself to 3 neighbors or spend time getting to know people in my community.
Community and Connection
Swap and Share with Others
Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 1 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Community and Connection
Attend a Local Event
Local events such as farmers' markets, festivals, or community meetings like town halls are great ways to feel part of a community. I will attend 1 community events to connect with others and learn more about my area.
Health and Well-Being
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Health and Well-Being
Enjoy Fruits and Veggies
Adding fruits and vegetables to our meals nourishes our body and the planet. I will prepare and enjoy 4 servings of a variety of colorful fruits and veggies.
Health and Well-Being
Go Get a Check Up
Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.
Land, Water, and Air
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Reduce Food Waste
Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Land, Water, and Air
Collect Rain Water
Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports gardens. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for 2 outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.
Wildlife
Log Species to Help Scientists
The more we know about the wildlife around us, the better we can protect species. I will download a wildlife monitoring app and log 2 animal or plant species I discover.
Wildlife
Learn How to Save the Bees
Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spending 5 minutes learning about local pollinators and why they are so important.
Wildlife
Learn to be a Responsible Tourist
Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 5 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet? What fruits or vegetables did you try this week, and which was your favorite?
Matilda Meyer 4/24/2025 9:51 AMVegetarians have a much smaller carbon footprint than meat eaters, so they are good for the environment. Eating fruits and veggies are also very good for your health, and they taste really good. This week I had strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and apples. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat did you do to prepare for extreme weather events? Share any tips or resources you found helpful in the feed!
Matilda Meyer 4/24/2025 9:50 AMI made sure we have extra food, water, batteries, and lights in our house in case of extreme weather events. I will also pay more attention to the news and weather to know of emergencies beforehand, so I have time to prepare. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat motivated you to schedule or attend your check-up, and how did it make you feel afterward that you completed this action?
Matilda Meyer 4/24/2025 9:48 AMIt's important to get check ups to fix things before they become a problem. It's also nice to know that I'm healthy and in good shape. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Matilda Meyer 4/22/2025 12:01 PMThis year our school is having a prom/homecoming dress swap. This is a really good idea because it lets people put to use dresses that we usually only wear once. It also lets other people get pretty dresses without having to spend a crazy amount of money. And it saves fabric and resources to make! A sharing economy helps people feel closer to each other, and brings them together. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionWhat did you learn about your neighbors or community through this action? How can building connections with your neighbors improve your community?
Matilda Meyer 4/22/2025 11:59 AMOn Sunday (easter) we went over to our neighbors house for a fun Easter egg hunt. Doing this was really fun, and we were able to grow our connection to their family through games and good food. Having connections with neighbors strengthens community by giving us people we can rely on, and vice versa. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionWhat did you enjoy or learn from attending a local event in your community? How did participating in this event deepen your connection to your local area?
Matilda Meyer 4/22/2025 11:57 AMI went with my mom to the farmers market today, to get our weekly CSA from a local organic farm. I really love going, because we usually walk our dog there so are out in nature, and we get to see cool booths and products, and sometimes try good food too. The farmers market connects me to my community because it's a place where we often see neighbors or friends and meet new people too. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?
Matilda Meyer 4/15/2025 10:42 AMTourism can impact wildlife and ecosystems by increasing foot traffic and introducing people who don't properly respect the local plants and animals. The next time I go on a trip I will be sure to pay attention to where I go and the local flora and fauna, and respect and appreciate the natural ecosystem around me. By traveling to more remote places and leaving no trace, or going to popular places but staying on designated trails, we can ensure the survival of these places and promote wildlife conservation -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow do pollinators impact your daily life, and what changes can you make to ensure they continue to thrive?
Matilda Meyer 4/15/2025 10:39 AMPollinators are crucial in ensuring that we get enough to eat. Without bees, bugs, and other animals, growing crops would be nearly impossible. In order to ensure pollinators continue to thrive, I will not kill bees, and ask other people not to kill them either, and teach people about them so they aren't as afraid.-

- 10-DAY STREAK
My wife has terrible seasonal allergies. A couple years ago she started using local honey in her tea and the worst of her allergies have subsided. All thanks to bees. -

- 13-DAY STREAK
Bees can look and seem scary, but respecting their space and providing space for them is important to saving the pollinator crisis. Education around this is really important too!

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat species did you discover and log? Why do you think that logging species can help protect them?
Matilda Meyer 4/15/2025 10:37 AMI already have iNaturalist, an app where you can take pictures of animals and plants and the app identifies them for you, and then other people will confirm your identification. I recently took a picture of the baby bird's we have in our backyard to find out who's nest it was. Turns out it was a song sparrow. Logging species helps scientists find out more a region's biodiversity and species counts. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money? What patterns did you notice in the food you threw away, and how can you address them?
Matilda Meyer 4/11/2025 10:00 AMI would want to use this money to travel or buy clothes or fun items. My family doesn't throw away food often, and when we do we throw it in the compost. I traveled recently, and we bought milk and butter to make Mac and cheese, but we didn't use all of it and had to throw most of it away before our flight home. In the future I can be more mindful to only buy what I need.
