Jean's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 1 hours in my community.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Climate + Air
Choose Renewable Energy
Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.
Climate + Air
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 5 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Jean Neubauer 4/22/2024 4:31 AMThis month we have added natural barley bales to our bass pond for reduction of invasive pond plants and reduction of mosquito larvae. We have also used our winter composted mulch to till into our garden beds and prepare them for planting next month. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Choose Renewable EnergyIf you are already signed up for your utility's renewable option, what other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage? If your company doesn't offer a renewable option, were they open to your request of this in the future?
Jean Neubauer 4/22/2024 4:27 AMI use only solar lights for all of my outdoor lighting around my property.-
Zenden Khoza 4/22/2024 4:46 AMThat's fantastic to hear! Opting for solar lights not only reduces your carbon footprint but also harnesses the power of renewable energy to illuminate your property. By choosing sustainable lighting solutions, you're contributing to a cleaner environment and helping to combat climate change. Plus, solar lights are a great way to showcase how simple changes in our daily lives can make a big difference in promoting a greener future. Keep shining bright with your commitment to eco-friendly practices!

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Jean Neubauer 4/22/2024 4:26 AMI have a 1/3 acre wildflower garden planted in my front yard every year. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Jean Neubauer 4/22/2024 4:23 AMAdd rain barrels to collect rainwater, use low flow showerheads and toilets, and don't dump harmful chemicals into the drainage systems.-

Understand Water Infrastructure and Interdependencies:
- Learn about your local water infrastructure, including sources of water, treatment plants, distribution networks, and storage facilities.
- Understand how different sectors (public, private, and community) rely on water services and how they interconnect.
-
Identify Vulnerabilities:
- Assess vulnerabilities in your water supply system. Consider factors like aging infrastructure, climate change impacts, and potential disruptions.
- Identify critical water-dependent services (e.g., hospitals, emergency services, schools) and their reliance on water.
-
Water Conservation and Efficiency:
- Promote water conservation at the household level. Fix leaks promptly, use water-efficient appliances, and practice responsible water use.
- Educate the community about water-saving practices.
