Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 10 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 10 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Carry My Trash

I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

COMPLETED 26

JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON

I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.

Land + Forests Carry My Trash
This is no small task! What was eye-opening to you throughout this action? How will you change your actions going forward to reduce the waste you produce?

reducing waste is a significant endeavor. Here’s what I found eye-opening:
    1. Single-Use Plastics: Witnessing the sheer volume of single-use plastics—straws, bags, and packaging—was eye-opening. These items linger in our environment for centuries.
    2. Hidden Waste: Beyond visible trash, there’s hidden waste in our lifestyles—energy consumption, digital clutter, and excessive consumption. Becoming aware of these subtler forms of waste was enlightening.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Low Carbon Diet
Which high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?

    Santosh Negi's avatar
    Santosh Negi 4/12/2024 4:31 AM
    1. High-Carbon Foods:
    2. Low-Carbon Options:
      • Fruits and Vegetables: Opt for plant-based meals. Root vegetables, such as carrots and potatoes, have low carbon footprints2.
      • Beans and Legumes: Lentils, chickpeas, and other legumes are excellent protein sources with minimal environmental impact.
      • Nuts: Almonds, walnuts, and other nuts are nutritious and eco-friendly.
      • Whole Grains: Quinoa, brown rice, and oats are sustainable choices.

Remember, small dietary tweaks can make a big difference in reducing our carbon footprint! 🌱🌎
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Consume only Needs vs Wants
Consuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?

Balancing necessity and desire is indeed a delicate dance. Reflecting on a month of mindful consumption, I’ve encountered a few challenges:
    1. Temptations: Resisting the allure of unnecessary purchases has been tough. The shiny gadgets, trendy clothes, and tempting treats often beckon, testing my resolve.
    2. Social Pressure: Peer influence and societal norms play a role. Saying “no” to outings, events, or materialistic indulgences requires assertiveness.
    3. Emotional Triggers: Stress, boredom, or emotional highs can lead to impulsive choices. Recognizing these triggers has been enlightening.

    Self-Discoveries
    :
    • Contentment: I’ve realized that true contentment lies in experiences, relationships, and personal growth—not in accumulating stuff.
    • Resourcefulness: Making do with what I have fosters creativity. Repurposing items and finding joy in simplicity is liberating.

    Habits Moving Forward
    :
    • Mindful Spending: I’ll continue evaluating each purchase. Is it a need or a fleeting want?
    • Quality over Quantity: Prioritizing well-made, lasting items over disposable ones.
    • Gratitude: Appreciating what I already possess—whether it’s material or intangible.

In this journey, I’ve learned that less can indeed be more. 🌟

    Santosh Negi 4/12/2024 4:30 AM
Eating more meat has significant environmental and societal consequences. It contributes to climate change, requires vast resources, leads to pollution and habitat loss, and poses health risks. Mindful meat consumption benefits our planet and fellow humans. 🌎🌱
