Work and Organizations

Practice Resource Sharing

Sharing strengthens resilience. I will take part in 1 acts of resource-sharing in my organization or with another organization, such as sharing tools, staff skills, or swapping knowledge, to help reduce waste and build collaboration. I will share what I did in the feed to inspire others!

Plant Trees

Trees are vital for resilience, storing carbon, sheltering biodiversity, and protecting water and soil. I will plant 1 trees in my yard, community, or through a local project to help ecosystems adapt and thrive.

What did you discover about how climate change impacts water where you live? How did it change your perspective on resilience?

I started by watching Ben May's TEDx talk. Looking locally at North Alabama, climate change tends to show up as:
    • heavier, more sudden rainstorms and flash flooding
    • longer dry stretches between rain events
    • more runoff, erosion, and water quality issues
    • warming rivers and lakes
    • stronger rain impacts during storms

In my area, it's less about sea level rise and more about variability and intensity. The water isn't disappearing, but it's becoming less predictable and harder to manage, which is the kind of disruption May was pointing to in his talk.
Resilience is not about solving one problem in isolation. It is about understanding how those pieces fit together and responding in a coordinated way.

Sustainability begins with small, intentional actions, and an Earth Month Eco Challenge is a perfect way to turn awareness into impact. I chose to plant a lemon tree because it provides fresh, organic fruit while also supporting cleaner air and a healthier ecosystem. I planted it in a pot in my backyard, where it gets plenty of sunlight and has space to grow. I'm keeping it potted for now, with plans to plant it in the ground once it matures. If you look closely at the photos, you can already see four small lemons beginning to appear, a rewarding sign of growth and care. In addition to the lemon tree, I also planted tomatoes, jalapeños, beans, carrots, and strawberries, creating a small, diverse garden that encourages organic eating and reduces reliance on store-bought produce. Pairing this with a commitment to eating organically (when possible) helps limit exposure to harmful chemicals and supports more sustainable farming practices. As everything grows, it becomes a living reminder that mindful choices, both in what we plant and what we eat, can take root and flourish into lasting positive change for the planet.

Gorgeous! I think we're too far north for citrus to thrive, but I'll get my basil and mint planted this weekend for caprese salad and mojitos this summer.
