Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 3 hours in my community.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 20 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 60 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 60 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Climate + Air
Choose Renewable Energy
Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Shannon Morelos 4/29/2024 9:07 AMI went to Yellow Creek Park here in Owensboro, KY. After my walk, I felt more relaxed energized and peaceful. I found that I had a greater level of patience with my family the day that I went out. Being in nature silenced the chatter in my mind and allowed me to have a quiet peace for the entire day. Working in finance, this was very helpful, and I will plan to get up andout ffor atleast 30 mins a day, on work days, when applicable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Personal Waste AuditWhat are the results of your waste audit and what did you learn? How can you reduce your waste going forward?
Shannon Morelos 4/29/2024 9:04 AMI produce a lot of garbage. I want to start focusing on only purchasing products which have sustainable or biodegradable packaging, or re-fillable items to reduce the amount of waste in my home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Cooking Oil DisposalDid anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?
Shannon Morelos 4/29/2024 9:02 AMI use way more oil than I should and I haven't been reusing it, as I should. I do not typically put my oil down the sink drain, instead, I wait for the oil to cool and put it into the garbage can. I do not think this is any better ultimately than washing down the drain, so I am going to start to strain and re-use cooking oil when needed, and focus on fixing dishes which do not require the use of cooking oil at all.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-FreeWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Shannon Morelos 4/26/2024 3:01 PMPlastic is everywhere. You cannot escape it in today's society. I will only use reusable shopping bags. I generally recycle mine, but when I forget to go for a few months you quickly see that plastic grocery bags are quick to take over the world. When you combine that with all of the plastic bottles, for laundry soap and shampoo and drinks... the list is incredible, and we do not always see that there is a real issue with packaging in the United States and must find another option for packaging in the future... and for the future. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Shannon Morelos 4/22/2024 8:29 AMVolunteering enhances the community by providing a service that might otherwise go undone/ unnoticed. It shows others that there are people who are willing to sacrifice their time and comfort for the needs and benefit of others. It changes my relationship with the community by humbling me to understand how lucky I am to have the blessings of my life and that I should commit myself to giving and doing more to help those less fortunate than me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Shannon Morelos 4/22/2024 8:20 AMThe use of plastic globally is very disturbing. When you realize there are whole floating garbage islands in the ocean, barges upon barges filed with garbage outside our cities, you begin to realize that the way we use plastic and discard of it is not sustainable with the amount of people on this planet. We will eventually be taken over by our consumption of things. I think as a whole, people need to reconsider how much they buy and use, and what of it is necessary. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and PaperBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
Shannon Morelos 4/22/2024 8:14 AMClean air in my lungs, a wonderful place for personal refresh and reflection, a vacation destination, shade from the sun and protection from the elements, food. -
Shannon Morelos 4/19/2024 8:01 AMI have been doing a great job with water conservation and also with litter pick-up. I always use a reusable water bottle, so it is fun to see how many bottles from plastic I am saving, and that number is incredible when you think about how long I have been using one. It is not enough though, everyone must do their part or we won't have a beautiful planet to live and thrive in. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in CleaningWhat did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?
Shannon Morelos 4/17/2024 7:33 AMI did not try making my own products, but I do have family members who do. I learned that many of the products used in cleaning solvents are harmful to the environment and do not dissolve like water-based products. I will make sure to keep this in mind the next time I purchase products to clean my home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Shannon Morelos 4/16/2024 9:21 AMI have a high efficiency dishwasher, so it does not use a lot of water, but I realized that I do rinse a lot, only so I don't have dirty dishes after cleaning. Another area where I can save water is in the toilet flushing. I found myself just flushing all the time, and not after using it. I would throw hair in an flush, blow my nose and flush. I stated using my trashcan more, and I am aware to not flush every time I throw a tissue in.
