Melanie's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Reduce Animal Products
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 2 vegan meals each day this week.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Melanie Mijares 4/25/2024 7:31 PMI chose this task because I have a variety of reusable bags that I almost always forget to take in the store with me. When I forget them in the car, I don’t even bother to go run and grab them 🤦🏽♀️ SO, I made it a point to walk my happy butt back to my car the 2 times I forgot my bags this week. I’m hopeful the next time I go to the store, the memory of having to trek back to my car will push me to not forget them in the first place! 🤞🏽-
Clover Lang 4/26/2024 7:06 PMI used to be the same as well, but like you, I also walk back to my car to get my bags now. Good for us, yay! -
Anne Coudrette 4/25/2024 7:36 PMLove this story! good luck with the bags.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Melanie Mijares 4/11/2024 12:37 PMI learned that within 2 decades, from 1970-1990 plastic waste generation tripled! That’s insanely fast changes! One thing that I know I can do to help a little bit is to avoid taking the straws offered with my coffee and other drinks that I purchase at a drive-thru. Also, not forgetting my reusable bottle at home when I go to work. That way I do not end up buying a plastic water bottle from the vending machine. -
Melanie Mijares 4/05/2024 3:59 PMI have been planning my 10 year olds birthday party for a few months. There were many items I purchased, but several items that I picked up through my town’s Buy Nothing FB group. As I was beginning to put together the balloon arch today, I was able to borrow a balloon pump from someone in the FB group and will be returning it to her Sunday afternoon. I don’t anticipate making many balloon arches and garlands so I really did not want to spend money on a new one.
