Melanie's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 2 vegan meals each day this week.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

I chose this task because I have a variety of reusable bags that I almost always forget to take in the store with me. When I forget them in the car, I don’t even bother to go run and grab them 🤦🏽‍♀️ SO, I made it a point to walk my happy butt back to my car the 2 times I forgot my bags this week. I’m hopeful the next time I go to the store, the memory of having to trek back to my car will push me to not forget them in the first place! 🤞🏽

I used to be the same as well, but like you, I also walk back to my car to get my bags now. Good for us, yay!

I learned that within 2 decades, from 1970-1990 plastic waste generation tripled! That’s insanely fast changes! One thing that I know I can do to help a little bit is to avoid taking the straws offered with my coffee and other drinks that I purchase at a drive-thru. Also, not forgetting my reusable bottle at home when I go to work. That way I do not end up buying a plastic water bottle from the vending machine.

I have been planning my 10 year olds birthday party for a few months. There were many items I purchased, but several items that I picked up through my town’s Buy Nothing FB group. As I was beginning to put together the balloon arch today, I was able to borrow a balloon pump from someone in the FB group and will be returning it to her Sunday afternoon. I don’t anticipate making many balloon arches and garlands so I really did not want to spend money on a new one.
