Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Action Track: Community
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and OceansWhat did you learn about freshwater and oceans you did not already know? In sharing this information with people in your life, which conversation was impactful to you?
Amy Merrill 4/22/2024 7:40 AMI learned that only 0.5 % of the world's water supply is usable and safe as freshwater supply. That means that over 3 billion (approx.. half) of the world's population has access to safe water. Sharing this information is important because we need to be mindful of how we use water and work together to find ways to improve water supplies to those who do not have access to fresh water.-
Lenora Andrews 4/22/2024 8:37 AMI heard something on the radio recently that the U.S. allows so many unsafe chemicals in our tap water; they also said they were going to slightly improve these standards. I used a filter for drinking water. The only time I use unfiltered water is to bath, brush my teeth and run the dishwasher or wash clothes.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-FreeWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Amy Merrill 4/03/2024 5:36 AMOne of the most recent items that I have switched to using is beeswax wraps for food. While the initial investment can be a lot, they are easy to use and a great replacement for plastic wrap.-
Lauren Combs 4/14/2024 6:52 AMDid not know about this, good idea! -
Lenora Andrews 4/03/2024 9:31 AMHi Amy, that sound great. I never heard of beeswax wraps for food. I will have to look into this. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work to help our climate!
