Offer a Skill or Service

Sharing our talents can benefit those around us. I will offer my skills or services to support my community, such as helping someone with a task, tutoring, repairing something, or volunteering my expertise.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Exercise Daily

Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 30 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Enjoy a Meatless Meal

Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 1 meatless meals and/or 0 vegan meals each day.

COMPLETED 13
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Collect Rain Water

Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports gardens. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for 2 outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.

COMPLETED

Donate to Support Wildlife

There are many amazing projects supporting wildlife and their habitats. I will choose a project or organization to support that helps species and habitats I care about and make a donation.

    Wildlife
How did it feel to plant something, and what kind of gardening did you do (indoors, hydroponic, outside in a garden, etc)? What did you plant and where? Feel free to share a photo to the feed!

Plants have always been a big part of my life: from my parents' house, to family members' gardens carved out of Pittsburgh hillsides, to dragging along vining plants and palms to my apartments and into park quarters, or even now my office, there are always plants around that I brought, grew, tended, or admired.

The current challenge is that I've been working on rooting a dieffenbachia (for indoors and away from pets) with a coworker after recovering a large piece of one that had been discarded at work -- so far we are both seeing roots forming in the parts of the stalk we each took! The stalk had been laying in an office space for nearly a month before I found it, I was told. It was a part of what was a much larger, and at least a 10 y.o. plant. Hopefully we can give these stalks at least another 10 years!

Otherwise, springtime means garden time: been spending time prepping my 2 veggie garden spaces, and getting some seeds and starters from a nursery/greenhouse in the county (check out Michael Bros. Nursery in West Deer!).

All around, I've been admiring the redbud, crabapples, and white pines have all been blooming and sporing in the yard. The redbud has been literally humming with bees, and I found it really moving/encouraging to see all of them buzzing around content and alive! If you can, I really recommend adding redbuds to your life and any space you are able to plant one -- native, helpful, and stunning against a PA stormy grey sky when it's in bloom. There aren't even words to describe it. And, the leaves are heart shaped once they grow out -- redbuds = love!

Good luck to everyone in their gardens this year! Good luck to everyone taking on a new plant, and I believe in you to grow whatever you're trying to grow.

I am still challenged to complete this task. Though I use reusable containers and tumblers for water and coffee for the most part, there is always something that I find myself discarding. Safety seals or wrappings continue to stop me from achieving this task, but I will continue my effort!

Protecting forests and public lands isn't just a good thing to do: it makes good sense to preserve habitats, places of historical significance, and green spaces that serve many purposes. While some are places the public can access and depend upon dedicated park staff (county, state, and federal!) to interpret and steward, other green spaces serve as a safe zone for supported wildlife and ecosystems. This is a critical mission, and I hope you'll join me in contacting our leaders to protect park lands, advocate for forest protection, and to support dedicated and selfless park staff who give their all to steward public lands and forests. Thank you to all park staff!

I always feel the same way after a workout and have gotten to the point that when I don't work out my day seems off.
