Ashley's actions

Land, Water, and Air

Conduct a Home Energy Audit

Reducing energy use helps protect the air and climate. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy and reduce pollution.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Produce No Waste for a Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Join a Cleanup Effort

Working together to clean up public spaces helps the environment and builds community. I will participate in 1 community cleanup efforts in my neighborhood or local area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Explore Resources for Managing Anxiety

Anxiety can be overwhelming, but resources and strategies can help. I will spend 1 minutes exploring resources that help manage anxiety and stress to support my mental and psychological well being.

COMPLETED 7

I'm reading a book called "Let Them" and it's really very good. It's about understanding that not only can we not control what others think of us, but that we really just need to let that go and stop trying to please everyone. She points out that we all think badly about others, but we still love them. Think about the thing your best friend does that just drives you up the wall. When they do it, it really annoys you, and you think badly of them, but you still love them. There a very good chance that if someone thinks badly of you, they still love you too. So it's ok. That thought lasts about 90 seconds and then if you don't act on it or build on it or encourage it, it's gone. Poof!

An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money? What patterns did you notice in the food you threw away, and how can you address them?

Typically me and my son mostly snack when we are at home. We are not big eaters. I tend to shop as we need. So today I decided to go grab us finger foods that are easier to preserve.

Used only reusable items and stuck to finger foods that can go back in the fridge when one is not eating. Like watermelon, cheese bites, already picked grapes, bell peppers and so forth.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How did changing your dishwashing habits make you more mindful of water use? What other small changes can you make to conserve water in your household?

When doing the dishes I make sure to start with dishes that do not require as much soaking, so I am able to reuse the same water for all the dishes. Also I will only rinse my dishes ones they are all washed so I am using less water and not needing to keep the water running.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
What did you discover during your energy audit that you weren’t aware of before? What steps will you take to reduce energy use, and how will they benefit both the environment and your household?

Today before I left for work I use to leave the T.V on for our dog, but this time I cut it off. I also unplugged all the unnecessary appliances that are not in constant use!

Today I took the time to clean up the cigarette waste that my neighbors leave outside their patio wall frame & picking up the trash left around the dumpster.
