Petro's actions

Land, Water, and Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Conduct a Home Energy Audit

Reducing energy use helps protect the air and climate. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy and reduce pollution.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper Products

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. I will learn about certification labels and buy wood and paper products certified as sustainable or recycled to protect forests and reduce environmental harm.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Collect Rain Water

Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports gardens. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for 1 outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Plant (or Adopt) a Plant

Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Attend a Local Event

Local events such as farmers' markets, festivals, or community meetings like town halls are great ways to feel part of a community. I will attend 1 community events to connect with others and learn more about my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Explore My Area

Discovering what’s nearby fosters a deeper connection to my community. I will explore 4 new places in my area, such as parks, historical sites, or local businesses.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Empowering the Next Generation

Support Youth Climate Activists

Youth activists are leading the charge for a better world. I will spend 30 minutes learning about or supporting youth climate activists through sharing their work or attending their events.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Go Get a Check Up

Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

COMPLETED 18
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 18
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 18
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Take Shorter Showers

Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

Simply added a a big pot on the balcony in the drain corner to collect additional rainwater. Which unintentionally also became a spot for birds to drink from. Luckily just the sparrows the pigeons avoid it still.

This one was an easy audit for me. At home, we’ve already set up a smart home system with smart plugs, LED lights, and A-grade appliances. There’s not much more we can improve on in terms of energy use—maybe just opting for even more energy-efficient appliances in the future. For now, I’ll let this one rest, knowing we’re already doing a lot to reduce our energy footprint.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What surprised me most about my water footprint was realizing how much water I was wasting during my 15-minute showers and by leaving the tap running while doing dishes. It really adds up. I’ve been actively working on shortening my showers and turning off the tap between rinses while washing dishes. These small changes have already made a noticeable difference. Moving forward, I’m thinking about other habits like using a bucket for rinsing vegetables or setting water-efficient appliances. It’s all about being more mindful, and even though it requires some effort, the positive impact on my routine and the environment is worth it.

Also being from the Netherlands. We’r not always so mindful with water. It’s cheap and abundant. So bear with me on this one.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

I thought I was doing well—green energy, A-rated appliances, and LED lights everywhere. But I realize my biggest carbon emitters are holiday flights and meal consumption. I’m working on reducing these, but I’m mindful of balance. It’s about making sustainable choices without sacrificing too much of life’s enjoyment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How did shortening your showers affect your awareness of water conservation? What other water-saving practices can you adopt in your daily routine?

Shortening my showers has been really tough—I’m someone who enjoys relaxing in the shower and could easily spend 30 minutes on my days off just unwinding in what I call my “spa moment.” It’s been a challenge to break that habit!

To help, I’ve started setting a timer to limit my time in the bathroom. I lather up with soap while the shower is off, then scrub and rinse quickly, which has cut my water usage down to just 1-2 minutes of actual water flow.

It’s been a big change, but I’m committed to keeping it up, both for the challenge and beyond. Even though it’s tough—because showering was my relaxation ritual—I’ve replaced it with other things, like taking more time to apply body lotion or listen to music. It’s making the change feel a lot easier!

As someone who also finds relaxation from a long hot shower, I feel you! Cutting my water consumption has been one of the harder challenges for me as well.

I’ve always been the type to leave the tap running while doing dishes, mostly out of habit and a sense of hygiene. But this challenge has made me more mindful of my water use. Now, I proactively turn the tap off between rinses, saving water without compromising on cleanliness. I’m hoping this small change sticks and becomes a lasting habit. Beyond dishes, I’m also thinking about other ways to conserve water, like taking shorter showers.

Forests give us so much, so I’ve started giving back—by choosing FSC-certified wood and paper products. Even small swaps count: I now buy eco-certified tissues instead of cheap home brands. In Thailand, I’ve found great sustainable options too.

An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money? What patterns did you notice in the food you threw away, and how can you address them?

Traveling through Thailand has made me rethink how I eat—and waste food. I’ve been having small, light meals throughout the day, usually just enough to satisfy me. With no fridge to stock, there’s nothing sitting around to spoil. It’s made me realize how much food I waste at home just by overbuying or cooking too much. When I’m back, I want to keep this habit of eating more intentionally and wasting less.

See below what was left of breakfast. Spicy pork salad with sticky rice. Keep forgetting to make pictures. This now being my only ‘food pic’
