Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

Traveling is where I emit the most carbon. I can help reduce this by doing the following changes:
    1. Try to consolidate errand trips into one day. If I need to buy groceries, stuff for the house, clothes, etc., do it all in one day instead of making several trips throughout the week.
    2. If I need to go somewhere close by, then bike or walk instead of driving.
    3. Use public transportation more. I will try to use the DART more for trips to Downtown or for getting to work.
    4. Carpool more. Riding together with friends or family if they need to run errands on the same day or going out together and take one car.
Making these small changes will help reduce my carbon output and won't be difficult to implement.

Hey Robert: This is wonderful. You really have it all figured out. I carpool on Sundays picking up my sister for Church. Thank you for giving items to focus on this month.

Robert this is great! I also like to run all my errands in one day and usually run them in the order that I pass by each stop.

Where did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?

I walked to the park not far from where I live that I have never been to. It was a little cold, but I took my dog with me and he loved it! The benefits were getting some exercise by walking and just enjoying nature. I didn't take my phone with me, so there were no distractions and I could just enjoy the beautiful scenery and allow my dog to have some fun.
