Heidi's actions

Health and Well-Being

Enjoy the Outdoors for 30 Minutes

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside, then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Remove Invasive Species

Removing invasive species (species that are not naturally found in my area and can outcompete native plants) can help beautify nature around me and protect local biodiversity. I will learn about invasive plants in my area and, if possible, support or participate in at least one effort to beautify nature near me by removing invasive species.

COMPLETED 13
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Produce No Waste for a Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Learn to Grow Plants Your Way

Growing plants can be rewarding and can create habitats big and small for wildlife. And, we can grow things almost anywhere! I will spend 120 minutes researching options for growing plants either inside or outside.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Learn About Water Justice

Access to clean water is a basic right, yet not everyone has it. I will spend 60 minutes learning about water justice issues and who is affected.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Attend a Local Event

Local events such as farmers' markets, festivals, or community meetings like town halls are great ways to feel part of a community. I will attend 2 community events to connect with others and learn more about my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Empowering the Next Generation

Read an Environmental Book with a Child

Stories inspire curiosity and care for the world. I will read 5 environmental-themed books with a child to help them learn about nature and sustainability.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Plant (or Adopt) a Plant

Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Join a Group

Belonging to a group can help build friendships and a sense of purpose. I will explore online or in-person groups or clubs that share my interests or goals and join a group to connect with others.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Learn How to Save the Bees

Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spending 30 minutes learning about local pollinators and why they are so important.

COMPLETED

Healthy soil, healthy planet. I will spend 30 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and how it helps restore ecosystems, improve soil health, and combat climate change.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Community and Connection

Swap and Share with Others

Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 3 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

My dream is to be a one-day gardener and I'm currently learning to be a house plant mama. Why? For in the home, plants are beautiful. They're wonderful air purifiers. They create a space that feels cozy and inviting, and maybe I'm weird, but plants give off energy and I like having good energy around me. So, my office, where I spend most of my time, is filled with plants. There's no such thing as too many plants. I'm starting to get more brave with different species. And I'm enjoying learning. For outside, aside from planting wildflowers for our pollinators, not much of a gardener. However, I dream to have a fruit, veg, and herb garden. To be able to grow your own food?? What a flex! Not to mention how beneficial it would be to limit the amount purchased at the store and the tickle down affect that has. One day!

Once I became a gardener, I kicked my indoor plants. I couldn't handle watering outside and inside too LOL

    Wildlife
What invasive species did you learn about in your area, and how do they impact native plants and wildlife? If you were able to support or partiicpate in an effort to remove invasive species, what did you do, and how it go?

I live in a neighborhood that out of the city and is very "natural". With this we have all sorts of trees, plants, bushes, etc., all growing wildly. It's really beautiful and I feel so incredibly fortunate. But, since volunteering with my local conservancy, I've learned a great deal about the most common invasive species in our area. I've even gotten literature! For the last couple years, I have spent time throughout my property as well as my little neighborhood and have focused on removing those invasive species. And then, when I can, planting something native in it's place. A lot that I've learned, about some of the worst in my area, is some species spread so fast and grow so fast, they take up so much space and resources that they will often kill the native plants around it. Or cover so much ground that our native plants can't grow there. My goal is to get our neighborhood as cleaned up as I possibly can, and plant as many native plants in their place. I want our neighborhood to still have its "wild" feel and continue to attract animals, while keeping our land healthy.

I mainly did research for my own property and our neighborhood. When we bought our home, it was a newly built home and on a chunk of land that has been overtaken by invasive species, debris, etc. This is our 4th spring in our home and we are STILL doing massive work to repair our property. The more I learn, the more I understand what it means to create a space that is beneficial towards our family and what we will use our land for as well as creating a space that is beneficial towards our planet and all species within it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
How did it feel to plant something, and what kind of gardening did you do (indoors, hydroponic, outside in a garden, etc)? What did you plant and where? Feel free to share a photo to the feed!

I am a slow learning, plant loving, girly. I have always loved plants but growing up in a home where a single plastic plant existed, I didn't learn or know anything about plants. Over the years I've purchased indoor plants and now my house looks like a small forest. In the month of April, I've purchased 2 plants, propagated 1 of my own and propagated a friend's plant. Outside I've been working on removing the invasive species on our property as well as planted native plants. This past weekend I've planted 4 new native plants that are also good for our pollinators. Additionally, created two massive beds for native wildflowers. Yay, pollinators!! I plan to continue this journey throughout the spring and for many years.

What was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?

Thankfully, I use to be minimal/zero waste prior to having my child. Since having my child, being minimal/zero waste is really not an option. Recently, I've been making steps toward getting back to minimal waste. I'm thankful that I already have the knowledge and experience! I still have some areas that I need to work on to be minimal waste every day, but I'm making some good moves by being zero waste a couple days a week! Whoohoo! What have I learned about my habits? Since having my kid I've chosen ease over no waste... mostly for the sake of time. I've realized that's been in a few areas of my life... Working on making the effort and taking the time for the sake of our planet!

Sunday was my first 70 degree day of the year. I spent majority of the day outside with my son, my friend, and her daughter. We saw bumblebees and talked/taught the kids about bees and what they do for our ecosystem. We soaked up the sun and could feel that seasonal depression lift away. Loved watching the kids play and run around the yard and just enjoy our first nice day of the year.
