Enjoy Fruits and Veggies

Eating a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables is a simple way to boost our personal health and support a more resilient food system. I will prepare and enjoy 2 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

Go Get a Check Up

Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Personal

Eat small portions and avoid junk food.

Eating is wonderful, but consuming excessive amounts of fast food or junk food can be a very bad idea for your body; regardless of the risk of obesity, this triggers serious health problems that are, at times, irreversible. It is important to consume the foods we enjoy; however, for example, if I like pizza, I shouldn't eat an entire family-sized pizza all by myself, but rather limit myself to two slices. Furthermore, it is essential to maintain a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and water, as well as to avoid soft drinks.

Dance can be prolong disease

When you dance or learn choreography, you are not merely learning dance steps; your mind becomes active, as you must coordinate your movements. Furthermore—regardless of your age—both your blood circulation and cardiovascular activity increase significantly. The benefit of dancing lies in the fact that it helps delay the onset of conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer's in later life; above all, it contributes to preserving a person's independence, enabling you—even at the age of 100—to remain self-sufficient, walk, and carry out your daily activities without the need for assistance.

ONE-TIME ACTION

What is resilience?

Resilience of culture

Arriving in a country where you cannot speak, write, or read the language is extremely difficult; moreover, the culture is completely different. For instance, in Mexico, we greet women with a handshake and a kiss on the cheek; with men, we shake hands, and it is customary to offer a hug whenever meeting someone new—even children. Here, however, people do not touch one another when meeting; they greet each other from a distance or simply say "hello." It took me years to break that habit. Likewise, among friends—particularly during our elementary, middle, and high school years—it is normal to playfully shove one another, hug, and roughhouse. While the intention is not to engage in inappropriate physical contact, here in the United States, teachers often interpret such behavior as violence and disrespect. There are millions of examples like this. It proves to be a challenge to have spent 26 years living in a country where such customs are considered normal, only to arrive here—where I am about to complete my twenty-fourth year—and find myself still trying to understand and assimilate into American culture.

What motivated you to schedule or attend your check-up, and how did it make you feel afterward that you completed this action?

My father passed away at the age of 33 due to diabetes. I was seven years old. All his sisters—(my aunts)—and my mother have always worried about me, especially now that I live far away; to put their minds at ease, I let them know as soon as I receive my results that everything is fine. Naturally, upon entering the examination room to be seen, one does so with the apprehension that the outcome might be negative. Even so, when I receive confirmation that everything is positive, I feel incredibly relieved and happy to be in good health.

How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet? What fruits or vegetables did you try this week, and which was your favorite?

Honestly, we need to strike a balance in our diet; meat certainly has its benefits, but if we don't balance it with other foods, we won't achieve optimal results. For instance, fruits and vegetables truly satisfy me immediately—I don't feel hungry at that moment—though perhaps two hours later I start to feel hungry again; nevertheless, I find it a healthy option, and it leaves me feeling light. I followed this routine last week, from Monday to Friday, and the result was that I didn't feel hungry or have my stomach rumbling in the middle of my workday. I felt more energetic and didn't experience any drowsiness. Typically, on Mondays, I buy a container of mixed fruit—including kiwi, pineapple, watermelon, honeydew, and cantaloupe—and each day I serve myself a small portion in a glass. As for vegetables, I include green and white broccoli, baby carrots, and green beans, served with my favorite Thousand Island dressing.

Honestly, during the COVID-19 outbreak, it was quite stressful to know that families were losing their babies or elderly loved ones because the virus had infiltrated their homes; sadly, many families were afraid even to go out to buy groceries. Since I was living alone at the time, every weekend I personally delivered a box of basic subsistence foods—donated by the church located across from the school—to about 25 families. I felt a great sense of relief knowing that I was making a contribution and that those families did not have to live with the fear of losing a loved one whose health might be fragile. They were terrifying times, but also deeply moving moments, as I witnessed the families' happiness when they received their food boxes. At one point, I got COVID-19 while living by myself, so one of my friends gave me a huge box of food for 4 people for 1 week. That time, I gained a lot of weight, even though I didn't eat for one week; it took me almost 6 months to finish it all.

    Hi,
Be honest, it is my first time working on this project, and I have no idea what I need to do. I look at my instructions, and it is not clear where to start. The reason I take this course is that it is part of my requirements to graduate from PCC and start university. I know I will learn a lot, I'm excited, but at the same time, I'm nervous. We'll see if I can pass this course.
