Taylor's actions
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 120 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Consume only Needs vs WantsConsuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?
Taylor Mannhalter 4/23/2024 9:55 AMIt has been hard but also kind of easy now thinking about how doing this lessens my impact on the environment, but also saves me money and space and forces me to be more creative and find new uses for the things I already have. I know at some point I may give in and buy things that aren't necessities but I definitely will think about what i may already have that could serve the same purpose before buying something new. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Taylor Mannhalter 4/16/2024 7:48 AMI did my carbon calculation through this website that has you enter a bunch of info about your life and habits and I found that I emit the most carbon through driving as I don't live very close to my job or school. I found out that the max has a stop pretty close to my house and my job so when I can I am going to take the max to work to reduce my emissions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Taylor Mannhalter 4/16/2024 7:39 AMwhile I was out on my walk I just brought a plastic grocery bag and filled it up with trash I found, and it made me feel good to do as well as got me a few thankyous and nods from others who were out walking around :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Cooking Oil DisposalDid anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?
Taylor Mannhalter 4/11/2024 1:16 PMI watched a short documentary about the impacts of disposed cooking oil on our waterways and the species living in them and it made me think more about the amount of oil I use, and how I dispose of it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Taylor Mannhalter 4/09/2024 3:55 PMI've been doing this for awhile but it shows you how much easier and cheaper it is to reduce your use of plastic water bottles and how much less plastic waste you produce :)-
