Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 5 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Learn about Native Species

The world is full of unique species. I will spend 5 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 5 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests Regenerative Agriculture and Me
What did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?

    Fen Magdalera's avatar

regenerative agriculture "is a system of farming principles and practices that seeks to rehabilitate and enhance the entire ecosystem of the farm by placing a heavy premium on soil health." It may entail: managing ecological relationships, keep the soil covered as much as possible, keep the soil planted and planted diversely, disturb the soil as little as possible, and use a diversity of life-promoting inputs. I can learn more about this through farm to table merchants, asking to discuss on the projects. I can also try to support and consume in-season fruits and vegetables as these follow the diverse-plants principles.

What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

I planned for a beach trip via a plane ride this summer. However, after calculating costs and being inspired to possibly cut down on air travel, we decided to take advantage of the condominium's pool which we haven't used in more than a year. Lesser miles, lesser expenses too. I will be more selective of trips needing to go on air and also try to explore nearby recreation sites.

learned about the biodiversity levels: ecosystem, species, and genetic. habitat loss, pollution, overexploitation, and invasive species are human causes of species endangerment; happy to be in a company like Emerson that has a strong sustainability action and plan---glad to know that investors, customers, and employees strengthened the call for sustainability; change happens with just a few brave individuals, we are at an early majority when it comes to sustainability; those who participate in this year's eco challenge are in a great place to demonstrate desired behavior to influence friends and family to join us in conservation and sustainability.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Fen Magdalera's avatar
    Fen Magdalera 4/25/2024 3:01 AM
There are many things to consider to eat seafood with the planet in mind: carbon footprint, methods of fishing, biodiversity impact, labor and equity. Farmed small fish may be a good candidate. As one of the material I watched said, "mollusks are mighty, feeder fish are fine, and big fish are big treats, and never forget to eat your plants". I will be more conscientious about the seafood I eat.

What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

I learned of the most common household cleaning products that may be considered as the top pollutants--feeling guilty because I use bleach a lot for household cleaning. I am looking for alternatives such as white vinegar and baking soda to see if I can reduce my usage of bleach. I have also started applying "less is more" when it comes to using cleaning products and started using measuring spoons instead of just freely using the chemicals. I intend to even lessen the commercial household chemicals that I use for cleaning.

I won't end this year's eco challenge without talking about my favorite animal, the crocodile. In the Philippines, there are two species. Crocodylus porosus, or the Philippine saltwater crocodile, and the Crocodylus mindorensis. Considered to be the most severely threatened crocodile species in the world, listed as critically endangered by the IUCN. There are lots of preservation efforts now as habitats of these magnificent creatures continue to dwindle.

I went to a swanky polo club in the middle of the city. There were lots of trees and greenery, but access to the club is limited to the rich and well-connected. I hope that there will be more push for green spaces in Metro Manila that are easily made available to the public

The moon is beautiful tonight. I thought the building lights were illuminating my usually dark balcony, but I looked up and saw the gorgeous moon. It was terribly hot and humid earlier today, as Manila continues to experience rising temperatures. Even the wind was hot, but I stepped out at around 7pm and felt the evening summer breeze and saw the beautiful night sky. Tried not to look at the horizon with the many buildings that continue to crop up along where EDSA is.

Still on the subject of my favorite tawilis fish and Taal Lake--I keep finding myself obsessed with the info and probably extending my supposed 5-min daily learning: The tawilis and Taal Lake snake are two distinct examples of how nature and biodiversity works. Taal Lake was once part of Balayan Bay and filled with salt water. Because of Taal Volcano’s frequent eruptions, it brought drastic changes in the surrounding landscape and resulted in the closing off and eventual formation of Taal Lake. Where before there was saltwater, freshwater now flow within. This new ecosystem led to some species to adapt and evolve in order to survive. That’s why we have the tawilis and Taal Lake snake.
Despite the danger of unpredictable eruptions, Taal Volcano Protected Landscape was included among 228 Key Biodiveristy Areas in the Philippines in a 2006 publication by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Conservation International Philippines (CI Philippines), and Haribon Foundation. TVPL was classified as Extremely High Urgent for biodiversity conservation. https://bmb.gov.ph/taal-volcano-and-biodiversity/
