I'm happy to understand the 17 SDGs better and how countries are committing to deliver according to those.

I also appreciate that I can now differentiate better among sustainable development, esg, sustainability, and csr

At the height of the pandemic, our community members would take turns making homecooked meals for the staff of our residential complex. We did this to ensure that our beneficiaries are eating nutritiously especially that they were interfacing a lot with others. This is also something that our household tried to continue after restrictions ended. Being mindful of others helps build networks and increases goodwill which may facilitate community cooperation and contribution to sustainability practices.

What was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?

Our consumption at home is fairly consistent. Usage also became lower when we maximized opening our windows and doors since we are not using air conditioning and air purifiers as much as we did before. I've also started testing if we can limit water usage through buckets and "tabo" instead of free-flowing use from the faucet

We repotted seedlings, as April in the Philippines is in summertime and the temperature is just too hot. We will be waiting for June, during the rainy season, to have the trees planted in the mountains. It's fulfilling to know that there's a legacy that will probably outlive you and continue to provide sustenance in the future.
  • Reflection Question

Why is it important to honor native and indigenous peoples and cultures? What have you learned that is important to you? If you identify with or are a member of an indigenous group, how does your community practice sustainability?

I watched documentaries about the Dumagat Tribe after being introduced to them again this April during Emerson Manila's tree planting activity. What struck me is how they use nature solely for sustenance on a daily basis. They also put community above self, with the family in the documentary giving food that they gathered from the mountains to their neighbors first and then keeping the last bits for themselves. I remember a story from one of the members that they were once jailed by the military because they refused to leave their homes when the place was declared as a reserve. This is an example of how decisions regarding their ancestral land are done without their consent. The indigenous tribes usually just get paid some amount for the land but not the cost of the ancestral domain that may be lost once they are taken away from the territory that they and their ancestors live/d in.

Thank you for the thoughtful discussion of the documentaries you watched. Now I want to learn about the Dumagat Tribe.

How does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

One of the things that I do is to block off 15-30mins for every hour of meeting. I use this time to either de-compress, stretch, catch up on emails, or go around the office talking to people. I also stick to my 15min and 1hr break schedules in a 9-hr workday. This helps me keep myself from burning out early and ignoring my health. In the long run, I think that good WLB may mean having the energy to put careful thought into greening actions and having the passion and motivation to teach and influence others on sustainability behaviors.
  • Reflection Question

What was a linking factor across this group of SDGs?

    Fen Magdalera's avatar
    Fen Magdalera 4/20/2023 2:03 AM
Access to basic needs, food (g2) and water (g6) may help individuals become healthier and more productive. This may then translate helping achieve goal #1 (no poverty)
  • Reflection Question

What one thing will you do right away to reduce your waste? What is the second thing you will do?

    Fen Magdalera's avatar

my trash is not heavy, but bulky! there's too much plastic packaging from online shops--two ways to mitigate this, specify lesser packaging on check out, and minimize online shopping from different stores. be more mindful about what i add to cart and check out.
