Trying to produce no waste was a serious challenge, and I wouldn't say that I succeeded, but it got me paying attention. It just keeps leading to more questions. Say I have instant coffee so I don't produce grounds; what happens to the container that it comes in? And the dishwater when I wash my cup? If I eat an apple instead of cheese (which comes in plastic), then what am I doing with the apple core? What do I do about pencil shavings, or pen ink refills? Complicated. If anyone has a workaround for band-aids, let me know. XD

organic waste, like your apple core, can be composted and returned to nourish the soil. The coffee container may be recyclable. Or, you may find a store where you can buy coffee in bulk, with less packaging. Waste water, if not contaminated by non eco-friendly detergents, can be used to water a garden/landscape. For pens, I use a fountain pen, but I still have to recycle the glass ink bottles when the ink is used up.

I can save a gallon here or there around the house, but the virtual water footprint is absolutely staggering. Less beef for me, thanks!

The number of duck flags in my neighborhood did not surprise me. The number of live chickens, on the other hand, was a shock. My neighbors like fresh eggs!

I had no idea water inequity was such an issue around the world. 4 in 10 people don't have enough water - for starters!

I went looking through the United Nations web site for ways an individual can make a difference, then got sidetracked with volunteer efforts in my community.

I did notice that, on the UN's Goal 6 commitment page, there are very few local government commitments to improve water access in the US. Maybe this is something I could bring up in my department...
