Sankara Narayanan's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 5 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Climate + Air
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Climate + Air
Choose Renewable Energy
Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Climate + Air
Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel? What results did you see? Please consider posting a photo of your cleanup!
Sankara Narayanan M 4/22/2024 2:39 AMIt was a pretty good experience. Spending some time with your friends is always a good feeling. I helped to clean the park nearby and it was great to see the results. Previously a lot of equipment were unusable because of excessive dirt buildup and lack of maintenance. Afterwards the playground equipment were usable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Sankara Narayanan M 4/22/2024 2:35 AMI planted Hibiscus and Rose in my garden. These plants are rich in pollen and bees are attracted to them-

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Choose Renewable EnergyIf you are already signed up for your utility's renewable option, what other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage? If your company doesn't offer a renewable option, were they open to your request of this in the future?
Sankara Narayanan M 4/18/2024 5:32 AMMy Electricity provider doesn't have a renewable option as of yet. Upon talks with the staff, I learnt that the state is considering to expand renewable options in the future and the option might be available then. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Plastic in Clothing and WaterHow did you try to catch the release of microplastics in your laundry? What did you learn in the process?
Sankara Narayanan M 4/16/2024 11:10 PMI Installed a filter to my washing machine which catches microplastics. I learnt that there is a surprising amount of microplastics in the laundry and due to the small size of the filter, cleaning it often is necessary. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in CleaningWhat did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?
Sankara Narayanan M 4/15/2024 11:19 PMThe amount of harmful chemicals in cleaning agents was a bit surprising. These Cleaning agents can cause significant damage to the ecosystem as the chemicals used in these agents are responsible for chemical degradation of fresh water sources. It can also cause depletion of resources in an ecosystem as plants and microbes are dependent on the pH of water. Ref: Cleaning Products, Environmental Awareness and Risk Perception in Mérida, Mexico - PMC (nih.gov).
I will try to make my own soap using coconut oil and use less harmful disinfectants such as 3% hydrogen peroxide which is an effective cleaning agent and also environmentally safe.-
Pavan Prakash 4/16/2024 1:22 AMMaking your own household cleaning soap with natural ingredients is a very good alternative.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Sankara Narayanan M 4/15/2024 12:44 AMThe hardest part about zero waste day was the small, lesser know aspects of your life playing a critical part. I learnt that small things such as eating a candy or buying packaged food often results in significant waste generation. I tend to refrain from buying packaged food but inevitably I cannot avoid plastic packaging completely. I was able to find out that the majority of waste I generate is due to the abundance of plastic packaging or the lack of thereof ecofriendly packaging options. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Invest in NatureWhat did you learn about how investing can support the environment and create a more sustainable world?
Sankara Narayanan M 4/10/2024 11:16 PMThe concept of Impact investments was really interesting. The feasibility of such projects is essential to the fight for sustainable development. I was able to learn that there are quite a few investing firms which would invest in sustainable projects around the world. Being an investor for one such organization will help me in creating a positive impact for the environment. I feel like investing in these projects will create a bigger impact than individual actions as I feel that as an individual the impact I can create to promote sustainability is very much limited. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Online Energy AuditWhere did you do an energy audit (work, home, school, other) and what did you learn?
Sankara Narayanan M 4/09/2024 1:50 AMI did an energy audit on my home. The results of the energy audit was a bit surprising considering the fact that I do my best to reduce limit energy usage. I learnt that old appliances will negate the progress brought about by using energy efficient modern appliances. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Sankara Narayanan M 4/05/2024 2:21 AMI was surprised to learn about the indirect ways I have been contributing to water wastage. The most mundane actions like buying a pair of jeans has a surprisingly large water usage. In order to reduce my water usage, I have decided to make a concious effort on trying to limit purchase of clothes and artifacts and try to conserve water by using water efficienct technologies -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Sankara Narayanan M 4/03/2024 11:50 PMMy daily commute is responsible for the majority of my carbon emissions. I have been considering taking public transportation or a bicycle to commute to work. I am also considering switching to an electric vehicle as a mode of transportation instead of a traditional motorcycle. I might be able to reduce my carbon emissions by about 20% if I can follow all these ideas in the future.-
