  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money? What patterns did you notice in the food you threw away, and how can you address them?

If I had an extra $1,500 a year, I would rather invest it in something meaningful—perhaps saving for travel, supporting a local charity, or buying higher-quality, sustainably sourced food that I would actually use. Realizing how much is wasted makes me think more intentionally about how I shop and eat.
I’ve noticed that most of the food I throw away tends to be leftovers I forget about or fresh produce that spoils before I get to it. These patterns often come from overbuying, poor meal planning, or simply not storing food properly. To address this, I’ve started making weekly meal plans, shopping with a list, and being more mindful of expiration dates. I also try to get creative with leftovers and freeze extra portions when I can. Small habits like these not only reduce waste but also save money and help the environment.

Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What changes did you make to improve your sleep, and how did they affect your day?

i'm working to accomodate my family's rhythms and to get enough time to start the morning with some exercise outdoor. To do so, i'm anticipating the dinner time and consequently the bedtime. This enhances the effectiveness of the sleep and the feeling of being fresh and recharged in the moening.

    Health and Well-Being
What did you observe or experience while spending time outside, and how did it affect you? How does connecting with nature enhance your physical and mental well-being?

While spending time outside, I observed the subtle rhythms of nature—birds singing in the early morning, leaves rustling in the wind, and the warmth of sunlight filtering through the trees. These small, often overlooked details made me slow down and become more present. Being surrounded by nature helped me disconnect from the constant noise of daily life and technology, allowing me to reflect, breathe deeply, and feel grounded.
Connecting with nature enhances my physical and mental well-being in many ways. Physically, walking or hiking outside improves my energy and sleep. Mentally, it reduces stress and anxiety, giving me a clearer mind and a greater sense of calm. Nature reminds me to live in the moment and appreciate simplicity, which helps me feel more balanced and resilient in everyday life.

Before you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now? What was the most challenging part of reducing refined sugar, and how did you overcome it?

    Attilio Lepore's avatar
    Attilio Lepore 4/14/2025 1:09 AM
I've never been "addicted to refined sugars. Participating to this challenge, though, made me think thoroughly to the advantages of cutting it and replace with healthier alternatives.
Reducing or eliminating refined sugars from your diet can have significant health benefits. It helps stabilize blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and energy crashes. It also supports weight management, as refined sugars contribute to excess calorie intake and fat storage. Cutting back on sugar can improve heart health by lowering blood pressure and harmful cholesterol levels. Additionally, it can lead to better dental health, clearer skin, and improved mood and mental clarity. Overall, limiting refined sugars promotes long-term wellness and boosts overall vitality.

How did exercising each day impact your physical or mental well-being? What activity did you enjoy most, and why?

    Attilio Lepore's avatar
    Attilio Lepore 4/14/2025 1:07 AM
I tend to start each day with some exercise, generally crossfit or jogging or simply bodyweight exercising. If morning doesn't work for me that day, i try to recover during the day, maybe during lunch break or before dinner. Besides these exercises , i take every possible opportunity to walk, use stairs insstead of elevators and use bike sharing instead of taxis. The exercise keeps our body healtier, our mind sharper and more relaxed (thanks to the hormones released during the exercise) and encourage sociality and communication. Thee are all benefits that we can enjoy in the short and long term: they make our day brighter and our brain more prepared for the challenges, they help dispel the stress and, in the long term, they preserve us from illnesses.
