The world is full of unique species that all play an important role in nature. I will spend 5 minutes learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Health and Well-Being
Declutter Book Swap Shelves (Part 1)
I started a little initiative several years ago so people could swap their books for free. The books were in disarray and didn't look appealing. I cleaned two book shelves and arranged all the books. I also rescued a plant.
Empowering the Next Generation
Enjoy the Environment with Youth
Experiencing nature together builds appreciation and connection. I will spend 30 minutes enjoying an outdoor activity with a young person, such as hiking, visiting a park or nature center, or exploring a trail.
Health and Well-Being
Enjoy the Outdoors for 30 Minutes
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside, then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Health and Well-Being

Adding fruits and vegetables to our meals nourishes our body and the planet. I will prepare and enjoy 5 servings of a variety of colorful fruits and veggies.

Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Anna Lepine 4/12/2025 9:24 AMI learned about the oak tree today, Quercus. I learned that there are species of oak all over the northern hemisphere, and that some species can live to over 1000 years! I also learned that the prefix Ac (like in Acton) probably referred to oak, and that Acton means "Oak Town" -- at least according to Wikipedia. I have a beautiful oak tree on my lawn, and it seems to release its acorns every two years. The wood is super strong and one branch holds up two swings :)-

- 16-DAY STREAK
The oaks down South are soooo beautiful with Spanish moss hanging off them. They were my favourite trees while visiting down there, when we went for a few years in the summer.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet? What fruits or vegetables did you try this week, and which was your favorite?
Anna Lepine 4/12/2025 7:45 AMI did not make my 5 servings of fruits and veggies yesterday, or at least I don't think I did. It was a bit of a frantic day, involving lots of computer work and then a three-hour online class and driving two kids around to activities and then grocery shopping. At least the grocery shopping was in part because I am having my parents and brother over today. I spent about 20 minutes outside total. This is the kind of rushing around that I hate, but that seems unavoidable sometimes.-

I always try to do 3 servings of fruit a day and then 2 servings of vegetables. Not always easy, though.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat native species did you learn about in your area, and how do they contribute to your local ecosystem or community? How might your community change if these native species disappeared?
Anna Lepine 4/08/2025 3:03 PMI learned about the Eastern white pine, since they surround me in my home. They are some of the tallest trees in North America. When I live under them, I consider them to be very messy trees, but if I stop to appreciate them, I must confess that they are majestic. They are also known as the "Tree of Peace" by the Haudenosaunee people, with the clusters of five needles standing for the members of the Five Nations Confederacy: Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas, and Senecas,-

Anna Lepine 4/02/2025 2:33 PMToday I learned about the Crow family (Corvus) because my son was having a cawing conversation with one this morning. I knew that Ravens and American Crows were part of the same family, but I didn't know that Blue Jays were, too! The Latin name for the American Crow is Corvus brachyrhynchos (crow with a short nose/beak). Blue Jays are Cyanocitta cristata (Blue Jay Crested). In the Sherlock Holmes stories, some characters are referred to as brachycephalic (short-headed), the opposite of Holmes himself, who is dolichocephalic (long-headed).-

Anna Lepine 4/02/2025 12:31 PMI attended an elementary school science fair today. There were so many excited faces and voices, so much enthusiasm for science. These events are so important for community building and for spreading the joy of scientific study! -
Anna Lepine 4/01/2025 3:05 PMMy son is my best role model when it comes to going outside. He asked to go for a walk, and we did. Although the path was icy, we had a quick 30 minute forest walk. We saw birds and running water, and both my kids found a new
"secret" path.-
