Morgan's actions

Soil and Food

Compost My Food Waste

Composting turns waste into a resource, building soil health and cutting methane emissions from landfills. I will compost food scraps at home, school, or in my community, which avoids sending up to 0.42 lbs (0.19 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Leave the Leaves

Fallen leaves, logs, and brush provide shelter and food for wildlife. I will leave natural features in my yard or community space to help strengthen biodiversity and soil resilience.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

What is resilience?

Learn About Ordinary Magic

Resilience is an everyday magic in all of us. I will spend 2 minutes learning about resilience and psychologist Ann Masten’s concept of “ordinary magic,” which shows how people adapt and thrive through small, daily strengths.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Choose Native Plants

Native plants provide food and shelter for local wildlife and help ecosystems adapt to change. I will choose native plants for my yard, balcony, or community space instead of non-native or ornamental species to support biodiversity resilience.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Remove Invasive Species

Removing invasive species (species that are not naturally found in my area and can outcompete native plants) can help beautify nature around me and protect local biodiversity. I will learn about invasive plants in my area and, if possible, support or participate in at least one effort to beautify nature near me by removing invasive species.

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

Soil and Food

Learn How to Save Pollinators

Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spend 10 minutes learning how to support local pollinators and take at least one action—such as planting native flowers or avoiding pesticides—to help sustain resilient ecosystems and harvests.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Personal

Enjoy Fruits and Veggies

Eating a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables is a simple way to boost our personal health and support a more resilient food system. I will prepare and enjoy 1 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

COMPLETED 22
DAILY ACTIONS

Take the Pre-Survey

Take the Pre-Event Survey

I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track

Host a Cleanup Event with Colleagues

Shared projects at work strengthen teams and build organizational resilience. I will host or join 1 cleanup events with colleagues, classmates, or group members to improve our environment and strengthen collaboration.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Personal

Go Get a Check Up

Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Take Shorter Showers

Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

COMPLETED 22
DAILY ACTIONS

Personal

Prepare for Extreme Weather

Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Soil and Food

Grow Something to Eat

Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Reduce Light Pollution

Too much artificial light can confuse and harm animals, especially those active at night. I will reduce sources of outdoor light or switch to wildlife-friendly fixtures to support healthy habitats.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Join a Group

Belonging to a group can help build friendships and a sense of purpose. I will explore online or in-person groups or clubs that share my interests or goals and join a group to connect with others.

Spent the weekend clearing invasive Vinca out of my front garden bed. Then I got inspired and visited a local farm for some vegetable plant starts. Excited to try my hand at growing a few veggies and herbs in for the first time! Got several varieties of pepper, kale, spinach, cucumber, zucchini and squash. This weekend I'm going to a plant sale at our local botanical garden and I'm hoping to find some additional native flowers to add for my pollinator friends :)

What did you learn about your water footprint, and what changes felt most practical or surprising? How does this connect to resilience on a larger scale?

I was SHOCKED that pet food was one of the top 2 biggest water using activities in my household! This weekend I also started roughly measuring the water it takes to rinse out my French press each day and I was horrified to find it's like a whole tupperware of water! I started collecting the rinsed water instead of just letting it go down the drain, and I'll use this for watering my plants. I want to also explore getting low flow shower heads and installing a rain barrel for watering the garden.

the french press part is so real, it’s one of those things you don’t think about until you measure it
i like the idea of reusing that water, feels like a small change but makes a difference

I joined a local gardening facebook group led by a master gardener who shares tons of tips for beginners. Occasionally they also host plant swaps or community projects so I'm looking forward to lending a hand and learning more!

Irises usually don't bloom until around Mother's Day here, but this patch in my backyard always seems to bloom early! Enjoying the pop of color they add to our yard

I've been researching all the plants that randomly pop up in my yard, and making a plan to remove the invasives and replace with natives. I'm going to try my hand at direct sowing some vegetable plants this year, mainly broccoli and peppers, and I'll add some native milkweed and azaleas. I am excited to continue learning about native plants in Virginia!

I did a walk through in my yard identifying the (many) random plants that have made their way in. Some are invasive so next weekend I will start digging them out (looking at you, Japanese Honeysuckle). And some aren't invasive, but do grow and spread aggressively, like Virginia Creeper, so I at least need to get their spread under control. Excited to learn more this month about native flowers I can plant to welcome the pollinators!

This is so relatable with Spring upon us!
Someone last year recommended to pour boiling water on "intruder" plants and I was shocked how effective it was and chemical-free!

Excited to see which native flowers you are going to go for :)

This is great that you're taking the time to do this! One thing to be mindful of is that different invasive species have different regrowth abilities at different times of year so I recommend looking up the species you want to remove for proper instruction on how to remove them and dispose of them. Sometimes their roots stay there and regrowth can happen so make sure to monitor that as well!

This is my first time reading about the concept of "ordinary magic" and it's already resonating so much. I love the idea that the simple, basic, most human things we already do, like investing in strengthening community, is really one of the most important. I am going to spend some time learning more about community gardens and food banks in my area to see how I can better support my community.
