Rikki's actions

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Conduct a Home Energy Audit

Reducing energy use helps protect the air and climate. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy and reduce pollution.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Sustainable Innovation

Conduct a Plastics Audit

Reducing plastic use starts with awareness, and there are amazing innovations in materials to replace plastic! I will conduct an audit of the plastic products I use daily and identify items I can replace with sustainable alternatives.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Sustainable Innovation

Choose a Product Made with Sustainable Materials

Every choice matters. I will purchase or switch to products made from sustainable or recycled materials to support innovation and reduce environmental impact.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sustainable Innovation

Advocate For Better Food Packaging

When companies and governments make large-scale changes to their products and practices, it makes sustainability more accessible to the masses, in turn creating further demand for sustainable products, and the cycle continues. I will advocate for improved, sustainable food packaging through petitions, letters, or by supporting brands that prioritize eco-friendly packaging - and share my advocacy actions on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Audit Toxic Products in my Home

Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 30 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Plant (or Adopt) a Plant

Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.

COMPLETED

Community and Connection

Explore My Area

Discovering what’s nearby fosters a deeper connection to my community. I will explore 3 new places in my area, such as parks, historical sites, or local businesses.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Learn to Grow Plants Your Way

Growing plants can be rewarding and can create habitats big and small for wildlife. And, we can grow things almost anywhere! I will spend 60 minutes researching options for growing plants either inside or outside.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Join a Cleanup Effort

Working together to clean up public spaces helps the environment and builds community. I will participate in 1 community cleanup efforts in my neighborhood or local area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Explore the Feed and Connect with Others

I will spend 3 minutes reading the Ecochallenge feed each day and giving high fives or commenting on posts by people who I don't know, but whose content inspires or interests me.

I hosted a clean up at a local park, the trail we signed up for didn't have much trash so we all decided to go throughout the rest of the park and found lots of trash from flood debris from a flood a month back. We found shoes, a box of KFC chicken, ranch dressing bottles, it was various unexpected litter. I was afraid I would be doing it along, but I had 8 partners join me!!! Team building for sure!

Non stick pans! We replaced them with stainless steel and thought it would be hard to transition but the biggest tip so far is just letting the pan get hot enough for water droplets to dance on top of the pan. If they sizzle, it isn't hot enough to cook yet and food will stick. If they dance, you're golden

I've been gardening in my greenhouse since last fall. I need to learn to thin out seedlings. Stop viewing it as wasting seeds, because when I don't thin them... the whole batch of seedlings die because they are too crowded.

Amazing! Wish I had a greenhouse to plant during the winter months. Remember it is always ok to thin out the amount of seedlings as keeping the plants healthy is more important than the amount you have. A single healthy plant can bear larger and more numerous fruits/veggies than many smaller sickly plants. I hope your gardening journey goes well and you get a bountiful harvest!

The biggest plastic waste I still need to tackle is food packaging. When making lunches, I'm using beeswax wrap and reusable containers, but I'm buying lunch meat, bread, lettuce, etc all in plastic packaging. Also, when shopping bulk bins, I never considered bringing my own paper bag!

Yes, plastic food packaging has been my concern as well. I try to avoid buying those over packaged food items as much as possible. I bring mason jars for bulk items, I see people write the tare weight on the jar, so cashiers can use that as a measurement.
