Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

Learn to be a Responsible Tourist

Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 5 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.

COMPLETED

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED

It was heartwarming to witness laughter, meaningful conversations, and the joy that comes from feeling included and appreciated. The sense of community and togetherness made all the effort worthwhile.
Yes, coordinating everyone’s schedules and accommodating diverse preferences—especially for food and activities—was a bit of a challenge. I overcame it by planning early, keeping communication clear, and encouraging a collaborative approach where everyone could contribute something, whether it was a dish, a game, or just a helping hand. Flexibility and teamwork truly made the gathering a success

Visiting the sacred site gave me a deeper understanding of its historical, spiritual, and cultural importance. I learned that it wasn’t just a physical location—it represented centuries of tradition, identity, and connection to the land. The stories passed down through generations and the rituals practiced there revealed how the site serves as a living link between people, nature, and heritage.

Sacred sites are vital because they preserve the cultural and spiritual narratives of communities. Protecting them honors the wisdom of Indigenous and local peoples, promotes respect for diverse beliefs, and ensures that future generations can learn from and connect to these places. Understanding their significance fosters empathy, promotes cultural preservation, and encourages sustainable tourism that values heritage over exploitation

I started by making small yet intentional changes—opting for products with minimal or compostable packaging, bringing my own reusable containers for takeout, and encouraging friends and colleagues to do the same. I also shared articles and tips on sustainable packaging through community forums and workplace discussions. These efforts were met with curiosity and support, and some local businesses even appreciated the feedback and began offering more eco-friendly options.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
What did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?

    • 17-DAY STREAK
I learned that while tourism can generate funds for conservation, it can also disturb wildlife, damage natural habitats, and contribute to pollution if not managed responsibly. Activities like feeding animals, riding elephants, or visiting poorly regulated zoos can harm animals and encourage unethical practices. To make more conscious choices, I now prioritize eco-certified accommodations, support wildlife sanctuaries with ethical practices, and choose tour operators that follow responsible wildlife viewing guidelines.

To prepare for extreme weather events, I created an emergency kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, and important documents in waterproof folders. I also installed weather alert apps and ensured all family members knew the emergency contact numbers and evacuation routes. At work, we reviewed our business continuity plans and made sure remote working tools were in place in case of disruption.
