Conduct a Home Energy Audit

Reducing energy use helps protect the air and climate. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy and reduce pollution.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Learn to be a Responsible Tourist

Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 120 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Community and Connection

Swap and Share with Others

Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 4 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper Products

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. I will learn about certification labels and buy wood and paper products certified as sustainable or recycled to protect forests and reduce environmental harm.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Sustainable Innovation

Conduct a Plastics Audit

Reducing plastic use starts with awareness, and there are amazing innovations in materials to replace plastic! I will conduct an audit of the plastic products I use daily and identify items I can replace with sustainable alternatives.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Community and Connection

Express Gratitude and Random Acts of Kindness

Small acts of kindness and gratitude can brighten someone's day and create a positive ripple effect. I will express gratitude to 1 people or perform 1 random acts of kindness to spread joy and connection.

COMPLETED 14
DAILY ACTIONS

Community and Connection

Attend a Local Event

Local events such as farmers' markets, festivals, or community meetings like town halls are great ways to feel part of a community. I will attend 1 community events to connect with others and learn more about my area.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Sustainable Innovation
What surprised you most about the amount or types of plastic you use daily? What sustainable alternatives are you excited to try, and how do you think they’ll reduce your plastic waste?

I thought I had been very good about living a plastic-free life, but I had one frequent culprit: plastic cling wrap. I have a lot of tupperware bowls that have lost their lids, and so in a pinch I'll just cover them with wrap. I figured that was more responsible than throwing out the whole set and buying a new one with lids, but maybe I can find replacement lids at the thrift store or online.

I also bake a lot of bread, and I'll typically use cling wrap over the massive proofing bowl while it's in the fridge. I recently got a bowl cover, so I'm excited to use that instead.

How did it feel to plant something, and what kind of gardening did you do (indoors, hydroponic, outside in a garden, etc)? What did you plant and where? Feel free to share a photo to the feed!

I have been notoriously bad at keeping house plants alive throughout my life. However! I have successfully kept 2 indoor plants alive for the past 4 months, which motivated me to get 2 more this month. It feels nice to have some greenery in my home, especially because I don't have access to a garden of my own.

I did also adopt a native pollinator plant (tickseed!) for my mom this month! I've been encouraging her to transition her garden to species better suited to our natural environment, and she's done a lot of work xeriscaping and being thoughtful of the plants she chooses. Our local master gardeners had a plant sale this past weekend and I bought her a plant she liked from there, so we'll have joint custody of it in her garden.

Sleep is such an underrated thing to prioritize. Making an effort to get extra time for sleep has made me realize how much my quality of life improves just from the changes in my mood by being well rested. I have more mental capacity for the things I care about and need to focus on, and I feel more productive each day. Catch those extra z's when you can, y'all!

What did you discover during your energy audit that you weren’t aware of before? What steps will you take to reduce energy use, and how will they benefit both the environment and your household?

One interesting thing I found out is that one of my baseboard heaters continues to put out a low-level of heat, even when I have the setting turned down as low as possible (there's no off setting). It's starting to become the warm season here and so I decided to turn that heater's power off directly at the breaker--it'll save energy and make my AC-less home more comfortable :)

Did you know that over 60% of farmed bees died this past winter, which is double the typical loss? Scientists are still trying to figure out why this happened, but this does emphasize an important point: native bee populations are needed now more than ever.

With farmed species facing a sharp decline, local agricultural and natural systems will face a pollinator deficit that native species can help supplement. Over a third of our crops and around 90% of wild plants depend on bees and other pollinators; losing them would be disastrous to human food systems and the natural world.

We all can take small actions to help protect bees and other pollinators. Plant native flowers and pollinator-friendly species in your garden, reduce your use of pesticides, buy from local farms that use pollinator-friendly farming practices, and donate to organizations dedicated to pollinator protection. Our future flies with pollinators--let's act like it.

This past weekend, I went to the farmers market + Saturday market downtown. I bought some locally grown produce (which I've already almost blown through... it just tastes so good!) and I treated myself to some flowers and art. I'm hoping to buy my produce from there more often this spring and summer.

After the market, I also swung by the event that was happening at City Hall. It was really cool to see the community organizing and getting their voices out there.

My water footprint is 1,357 gallons per day. My biggest categories are diet, electricity generation, and shopping habits (all virtual water use). I keep a vegetarian diet, so I'm going to try eating vegan more often to reduce that category. I'm a little shocked at how high the water associated with my shopping habits is, considering I already shop very little. I wonder how accurately this calculator captures our local utility's renewable energy sources in terms of the water cost of electricity generation?

Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

My carbon footprint is 4.6 tons of CO2 per year. My largest category is travel (2.3 tons). I have family that lives far out of state, so airline travel to see them can add up quick in terms of emissions. I'm going to think about purchasing carbon offsets whenever I have to travel in a way that has big associated emission costs.
