JR Jackson 4/30/2025 6:50 PMI joined up later than I had from previously years. I feel with all that is going with local and federal politics people focused isn't on the environment, local communities, volunteerism, health and education.

Share My Why
Take the Earth Month Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!
Share My Why
Share My Why
I will share my Ecochallenge story and why I'm taking action for the planet — and earn 15 points!
Community and Connection
Offer a Skill or Service
Sharing our talents can benefit those around us. I will offer my skills or services to support my community, such as helping someone with a task, tutoring, repairing something, or volunteering my expertise.
Wildlife
Donate to Support Wildlife
There are many amazing projects supporting wildlife and their habitats. I will choose a project or organization to support that helps species and habitats I care about and make a donation.
Community and Connection
Keep My Community Clean
A clean community benefits everyone. Each day I am outside, I will pick up 10 pieces of litter to keep my community clean.
Health and Well-Being
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 20 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Health and Well-Being
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Land, Water, and Air
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Wildlife
Log Species to Help Scientists
The more we know about the wildlife around us, the better we can protect species. I will download a wildlife monitoring app and log 12 animal or plant species I discover.
Land, Water, and Air
Join a Cleanup Effort
Working together to clean up public spaces helps the environment and builds community. I will participate in 1 community cleanup efforts in my neighborhood or local area.
Land, Water, and Air
Take Shorter Showers
Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!
Community and Connection
Visit or Learn About a Culturally Significant Site Near Me
Sites of cultural and spiritual significance hold deep meaning for many communities, particularly Indigenous peoples. I will learn about or visit a site near me that is significant to the history, culture, or environment of the area. I will approach my visit with respect by researching its importance and guidelines beforehand, reflecting on how we can preserve these spaces for future generations.
Sustainable Innovation
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
When companies and governments make large-scale changes to their products and practices, it makes sustainability more accessible to the masses, in turn creating further demand for sustainable products, and the cycle continues. I will advocate for improved, sustainable food packaging through petitions, letters, or by supporting brands that prioritize eco-friendly packaging - and share my advocacy actions on the feed.
Wildlife
Learn the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace
Leave No Trace means enjoying nature responsibly by minimizing our impact and leaving the environment as we found it, or better. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the seven core principles to minimize my impact while enjoying the outdoors.
Wildlife
Learn to Grow Plants Your Way
Growing plants can be rewarding and can create habitats big and small for wildlife. And, we can grow things almost anywhere! I will spend 30 minutes researching options for growing plants either inside or outside.
Community and Connection
Attend a Local Event
Local events such as farmers' markets, festivals, or community meetings like town halls are great ways to feel part of a community. I will attend 2 community events to connect with others and learn more about my area.
Health and Well-Being
Enjoy the Outdoors for 30 Minutes
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside, then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionWhat did you enjoy or learn from attending a local event in your community? How did participating in this event deepen your connection to your local area?
Jennifer Klotz 4/30/2025 2:42 PMUnfortunately, this event had low attendance so that brought some disappointment. It was an effort to build community and I had hoped for more. I feel it's quite representative of today's society, and that worries me. Isolationism causes such a roadblock to progress, whether that be environmentalism, equal representation, reproductive rights, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionWhat skill or service did you offer, and how did it impact someone in your community? How did sharing your expertise or time help you feel more connected to others?
Jennifer Klotz 4/30/2025 2:37 PMI led a workshop to train others how to conduct a citizen science project for monarch butterflies. Not only will the data they submit broaden what's available for scientists and policy makers, but each individual will feel good doing it. Monarchs have a connection to many, whether spiritually or otherwise, so helping them help the butterflies makes them happy and feel like they're doing something about a problem (low population, habitat destruction). That in turn extends my reach and brings me happiness too! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat project or organization did you choose to support, and why did it resonate with you? What are some ways you can continue to support wildlife conservation beyond financial contributions?
Jennifer Klotz 4/29/2025 1:45 PMI donated to Ocean Conservancy, which I have in the past. This particular instance was primarily due to a 2x match offered. Therefore, I was making a bigger impact! As a marine biologist, organizations like these are on my list of donations. I focus on wildlife and habitat preservation organizations in general. I help in this area through my job as a community engagement specialist for a zoo. It involves conducting conservation work through citizen science projects and partnerships with state agencies. I also educate all ages through programs, outreach, social media posts, and onsite events. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirWhat was the most unexpected piece of trash that was picked up during your local cleanup effort? How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Jennifer Klotz 4/29/2025 1:41 PMI know cigarette butts are the most common item in cleanups worldwide, but I'm shocked to see it anyway because of all the health information out there. It's 2025, how can anyone still smoke? Want to lose your bottom jaw? Want to have cancer? Want to damage your eyes? There are literally pictures of healthy lungs next to those of a smoker. The fact people still say 'yep, light it up' boggles my mind. We had 626 butts on our cleanup which spanned 2/3 of a mile and included an elementary school! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirWhat surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?
Jennifer Klotz 4/29/2025 1:38 PMI was happy to learn I'm under the average but won't let that prevent me from making changes where I can. My biggest usage in the direct category is the kitchen. Our sink is flat bottomed, meaning food debris sits in different spots when it would normally flow to the drain with the water if angled. I use the spray faucet to move it out but must think of something else because that's literally right down the drain. I also plan to pop a bucket in the shower to catch water as it warms up. -
Jennifer Klotz 4/02/2025 8:26 AMGreetings! I chose the challenge of reducing my shower time, however, the resources provided in the Action don't really say HOW to do that. They just say "cut it down to 5min" or "use a timer". Ok, but if I time it and it's 10min, HOW do I reduce it?! Anyone have any tips for this part? In separate online searches thus far, I've only seen one method that would help- turning off the water while soaping up. Hoping for others though!
