Soil and Food

Compost My Food Waste

Composting turns waste into a resource, building soil health and cutting methane emissions from landfills. I will compost food scraps at home, school, or in my community, which avoids sending up to 0.42 lbs (0.19 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day.

Water

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

Reduce Refined Sugar

Cutting back on refined sugar can improve energy, mood, and overall health. I will limit my intake of sugary snacks and drinks by reducing refined sugar in meals or snacks each day.

Exercise Daily

Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 45 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.

Enjoy Fruits and Veggies

Eating a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables is a simple way to boost our personal health and support a more resilient food system. I will prepare and enjoy 6 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

Water

Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants

Mulching helps soil hold water and reduces runoff. I will mulch the base of trees or other plants at home, school, or in my community to improve water retention and soil health.

I have had a bunch of injuries over the last 5 years that have kept me from being as active as I'd like, and I am also working from home for the first time. Getting active again is doing so much for my mental and physical health! I am going to Maui in June (I used to live there), and so having the goal of being surf ready is keeping me accountable. Besides being ridiculously sore, I'm feeling great!

    Soil and Food
What did you notice about how much of your food waste could be composted? How does composting change the way you see “waste”?

Now that I live in a "food forest" with a big emphasis on permaculture, I am learning that I can compost SO MUCH! I eat a mostly whole food diet, so almost everything can go into compost.. egg shells, fruit & veggie scraps, and even tea bags! I'm in the Phoenix area, and the soil on the property that I live on has been being amended for 13 years. It's incredible!

I recently moved into an apartment that is in a food forest. My landlord is amazing and teaching me A TON about permaculture and what is growing here. Just the experience of living here and being around him has helped me to change my water habits by taking shorter showers and turning the water off when possible, when doing dishes.
