Work and Organizations
Join or Start a Green Team
Green teams strengthen resilience by creating shared responsibility. I will join or help start a green team in my workplace, school, or community group to support sustainability and collaboration.
What is resilience?
Learn About Ecological Resilience
Resilience is part of how nature works. I will spend 5 minutes learning about ecological resilience—how ecosystems adapt to disturbances and renew themselves through cycles of growth and renewal.
Water
Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.
Action Track
Environmental Volunteer Opportunity - FCR Volunteer Day
Give back to your community & the environment by participating in an environmentally-related volunteer activity this April. Not only will you get points in the EcoChallenge, but this counts towards FCR's corporate volunteer day objective as well!
Soil and Food
Preserve or Store Food
Preserving food through freezing, drying, or fermenting helps food last longer, reduces waste, and ensures supplies during difficult times. I will preserve or store food during the challenge to strengthen household and community resilience.
Action Track
Take Part in a Community Beautification Project
Working together builds resilience and pride in the places we care about. I will participate in 1 community projects such as a cleanup or local beautification project that strengthens connections and shared purpose.
Community
Swap and Share with Others
Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 2 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Water
Only run dishwasher/laundry with full loads
The goal is to use less water and to save resources.
Personal
Pilates
I will strengthen my personal resilience by staying active through Pilates and spending time outdoors hiking whenever possible. Each day, I will take a few minutes to reflect, focus on the positive, and manage stress through movement and mindful breaks.
Personal
Enjoy Fruits and Veggies
Eating a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables is a simple way to boost our personal health and support a more resilient food system. I will prepare and enjoy 3 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Choose Native Plants
Native plants provide food and shelter for local wildlife and help ecosystems adapt to change. I will choose native plants for my yard, balcony, or community space instead of non-native or ornamental species to support biodiversity resilience.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Leave the Leaves
Fallen leaves, logs, and brush provide shelter and food for wildlife. I will leave natural features in my yard or community space to help strengthen biodiversity and soil resilience.
Share My Why
Share My Why
I will share my Ecochallenge story and why I'm taking action for the planet — and earn 15 points!
Personal
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Personal
Go Get a Check Up
Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.
What is resilience?
Share a Definition of Resilience
Sharing builds common understanding. I will share 1 definitions of resilience that resonate with me—through conversations, social media, or the event feed—to help others explore what resilience means.
Community
Host a Gathering
Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.
Share My Why
Take the Earth Month Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!
Personal
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 40 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
What is resilience?
Repair over replace
I gave a "second life" to one broken item - mended a piece of clothing for my daughter, she really likes it. Resilience is about recovering from damage rather than being discarded
Community
Share what I've learn with the office
I have spent the last 30 days learning and reflecting. I will share what I have learnt with my colleagues in the office.
Soil and Food
Learn How to Save Pollinators
Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spend 5 minutes learning how to support local pollinators and take at least one action—such as planting native flowers or avoiding pesticides—to help sustain resilient ecosystems and harvests.
Soil and Food
Grow Something to Eat
Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.

We live in a "throwaway" culture, but resilience is about giving things a second chance. A missing button or a wobbly chair leg doesn’t mean it’s trash—it’s just waiting for a comeback! -

Ecological resilience is how well nature can bounce back after damage or change. -

Instead of clearing everything away, we leave a natural layer of leaves under our apple and walnut trees at the cottage for the winter. It felt like a small shift, but it supports so much life—providing shelter for pollinators, enriching the soil, and helping the trees thrive naturally.-

I got my blood tests done 🩸
It’s easy to put off, but it feels good to stay on top of my health and check how everything’s doing.

I secured balcony items so they won’t blow away during strong winds, and made sure drains are clear to prevent water buildup.

After gatherings, we send food home with friends so nothing goes to waste. We also swap and pass along household items and clothes when they no longer fit or serve us.
It’s a simple way to reduce waste, save resources. What we don’t need can still be valuable to someone else.

My “why” for joining Ecochallenge is deeply personal. Moving to a new country has made me think a lot about what truly matters—community, resilience, and the kind of world we are building for the future.
Through this journey, I’ve learned that even small, everyday actions can have meaning. Cooking at home, reducing waste, gathering people around the table, and supporting one another—these are simple choices, but they help create a more thoughtful and sustainable way of living.
Taking action for the planet isn’t just about big changes; it’s about the habits we build and the example we set. I want to be part of a community that cares—for the environment and for each other. 🌍

This weekend I hosted a small but meaningful gathering with our host family and friends.
I prepared a homemade potato pie along with a few fresh salads—simple dishes, but ones that carry comfort and Ukrainian tradition. Sharing food felt like sharing a piece of home, something familiar in a new place.
Grateful for these connections and the opportunity to create a welcoming, sustainable space through good food and good company. 🌱
