Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Reduce Animal Products
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Climate + Air
Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Swati Joshi 4/23/2024 2:21 PMI was actually surprised to learn that my water footprint is smaller than that of the average person in the U.S. There are still things I can do to improve it further, such as cutting down shower times, not running the water while brushing teeth, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Swati Joshi 4/23/2024 2:19 PMMy carbon footprint is much bigger than I thought it would be! There are a lot of actions I can take to reduce it, like making an effort to buy seasonal and local produce, seeking products that have minimal to no packaging, and cutting down on consumption of dairy products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Online Energy AuditWhere did you do an energy audit (work, home, school, other) and what did you learn?
Swati Joshi 4/23/2024 1:36 PMI did an informal energy audit of my home and concluded that since it is only about a decade old, it is already quite energy efficient. The areas where I can improve or influence energy usage are by shifting my thermostat settings by a degree or two and by unplugging appliances and turning off lights, computers, etc. when they aren't in use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Reduce Animal ProductsHow does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Swati Joshi 4/19/2024 5:55 AMI was raised with the philosophy to minimize any harm to living beings, so not eating meat is a way of life for me and a way to practice non-violence. That said, I recognize that I can make more of an effort to incorporate more vegan meals into my diet to further minimize carbon impact. -
Swati Joshi 4/17/2024 5:40 AMI'm feeling better about what I eat and choosing my foods more carefully by considering whether they are lower carbon options. I'm not getting outside as much as I'd like, but when I do, I definitely feel the positive effect on my mental wellbeing! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Declutter My Home Without the LandfillHow did it feel to intentionally declutter with putting things into the landfill? What did you learn along the way about yourself and our consumer and waste systems?
Swati Joshi 4/04/2024 5:53 PMOne thing I'm learning about myself is that the thing holding me back from decluttering isn't a high level of attachment to my things but feeling so overwhelmed by the amount of stuff I've accumulated that I have a hard time just starting the process. I need to focus on small areas--one drawer, one corner, etc. to keep it manageable.-
Swati Joshi 4/05/2024 5:45 AMThanks for sharing your experience, Shelley. That's encouraging! -
Shelley Pinckney 4/04/2024 7:01 PMThis is how I started to declutter my home. Still working at it. I do this in the office, too.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Low Carbon DietWhich high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?
Swati Joshi 4/04/2024 5:50 PMI already eat a vegetarian diet but knowing that fruits and vegetables are lower carbon options is definitely a great reason to try and consume more of them in relation to the other foods I eat. This daily activity is also making me really think about where my food comes from and how it's packaged. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests 30 for 30 in NatureWhat have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?
Swati Joshi 4/02/2024 2:58 PMUnfortunately it is high tree pollen season where I live, and my allergies are pretty bad at the moment. I am lucky to have beautiful views of trees, flowers and a lush green yard from my home though, which is how I will be enjoying nature until my allergies calm down enough for me to spend time outdoors. :-) -
Swati Joshi 4/01/2024 3:09 PMI'm excited to take small steps toward better sustainability. I'm doing this for the planet, but more importantly for my family--especially the next generation. I'm very far from perfect and it's too easy to criticize myself for all the things I'm NOT doing, but I'm choosing to focus instead on the little things I'm doing that are in the right direction.
