UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper Products

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. I will learn about certification labels and buy wood and paper products certified as sustainable or recycled to protect forests and reduce environmental harm.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Learn to Choose Forest-Friendly Foods

Our food choices can help protect forests and wildlife. I will spend 30 minutes learning how to choose foods that are grown in ways that protect forests, such as avoiding products linked to deforestation and seeking certified sustainable options like shade-grown coffee or palm oil-free products.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Learn to be a Responsible Tourist

Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 30 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Audit Toxic Products in my Home

Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 30 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Replace a Product

Small changes can make a big difference for health and sustainability. Using what I learned from auditing ingredients in the products I use, I will replace 2 toxic or harmful products I use with safer, eco-friendly alternatives.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sustainable Innovation

Advocate For Better Food Packaging

When companies and governments make large-scale changes to their products and practices, it makes sustainability more accessible to the masses, in turn creating further demand for sustainable products, and the cycle continues. I will advocate for improved, sustainable food packaging through petitions, letters, or by supporting brands that prioritize eco-friendly packaging - and share my advocacy actions on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED

Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.

I have a small kit of necessary emergency medical supplies in an easily accessible location and have mapped parts of my home that would be the safest in different natural disasters like tornadoes, flooding, and earthquakes. I also make sure that, during any extreme weather, I have a weather radar pulled up and am tuned it to where a storm cell might be and where it might be going.

Honestly the thing that is still most surprising to me is how toxic plastic Tupperware and things like black plastic spatulas can be. The same with non-stick pans. These are things I've used every day even since I was a child, so it worries me how much exposure I've already had, but now I am choosing to replace these products with safer, healthier, and more sustainable options!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Well-Being
What product did you replace, and why was it important to you? How do you feel about making a small change for a healthier, more sustainable home?

    • 10-DAY STREAK
I have recently replaced some of my old plastic Tupperware containers with glass ones! I have also stopped using paper towels in my house and have just been using reusable washcloths. These changes are important to me because plastic is known to release toxic chemicals and microplastics into the environment and I don't want to add more garbage to the landfill from used paper towels when I can just reuse cloth ones. It makes me feel good to do something, even if it is a small change!

I will commit to trying to avoid foods that are known to be linked to deforestation and monocropping to try and do my part to keep the world healthy. I will support local farmers and growers as much as I can!

I learned that there are many different ways that we can grow food while keeping our environment intact! For example, focusing on biodiversity instead of monocropping. I can help support healthy farming practices by using them in my own garden and doing my research to buy local produce.

I've started composting my food scraps instead of using plant fertilizer and I am growing native flowers alongside my fruits and veggies so that pollinators will enjoy my garden space! I am starting my seeds in a little green house and will be moving them outside to pots when it's warm enough since I don't have any yard.

An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money? What patterns did you notice in the food you threw away, and how can you address them?

I've noticed that I throw away quite a bit of scraps that could be put to perfectly good use but aren't because I have some weird sensory issues when it comes to certain textures in food. So, to keep myself happy and to reduce my food waste, I've been using it as compost for my plants! This keeps me from buying fertilizers and helps me grow native flowers and my own fruits and veggies :)

I always struggle with getting enough sleep at night (thanks insomnia), but I find that putting away screens and picking up a book instead helps me fall asleep faster and have better quality of sleep! When I am able to get enough sleep, I feel more awake and ready for the day and have more motivation to get my stuff done.

I think the screens and blue light have negatively impacted sleep for all of us. Great point to try a real book instead to wind down. I recently incorporated sleeping on a grounding sheet and believe that has helped me some too. Good luck!!
