Joy's actions
Take the Pre-Survey
Take the Pre-Event Survey
I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)
Community
Attend a Local Event
Local events such as farmers' markets, festivals, or community meetings like town halls are great ways to feel part of a community. I will attend 5 community events to connect with others and learn more about my area.
Community
Join a Group
Belonging to a group can help build friendships and a sense of purpose. I will explore online or in-person groups or clubs that share my interests or goals and join a group to connect with others.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Reduce Light Pollution
Too much artificial light can confuse and harm animals, especially those active at night. I will reduce sources of outdoor light or switch to wildlife-friendly fixtures to support healthy habitats.
Soil and Food
Compost My Food Waste
Composting turns waste into a resource, building soil health and cutting methane emissions from landfills. I will compost food scraps at home, school, or in my community, which avoids sending up to 0.42 lbs (0.19 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day.
What is resilience?
Learn About Ecological Resilience
Resilience is part of how nature works. I will spend 15 minutes learning about ecological resilience—how ecosystems adapt to disturbances and renew themselves through cycles of growth and renewal.
Personal
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Personal
Enjoy Fruits and Veggies
Eating a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables is a simple way to boost our personal health and support a more resilient food system. I will prepare and enjoy 2 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
What is resilience?
Reflect on My Own Resilience
Resilience is personal and collective. I will reflect on a time when I adapted to change in my own life, writing down what helped me and what I learned from the experience.
Share My Why
Take the Earth Month Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!

I got out in the garden for a minute and harvested a strawberry and saw the grapes coming along and the radishes and the peas. I don't know if I could love the earth and natural world more than I do. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonalHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet? What fruits or vegetables did you try this week, and which was your favorite?
Joy Johnson 4/22/2026 9:57 AM- Earth Advocate 📣
I had a fruit salad bowl for breakfast with mandarin oranges, nectarines, watermelon, and pears in it. It's somewhat easier to think about and acknowledge the karmic baggage of fruits and vegetables vs. meat, however my fruit salad did have kefir on it - - from a certified humane goat herd. <3 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWhat is resilience? What personal strengths or supports helped you adapt to a past challenge? How might those same strengths help you in the future?

Growing up on a farm and reading Mother Earth News probably had more than anything else to do with my ecological awareness. I kinda miss that life!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity and WildlifeWhat lights did you reduce or change, and how might this help wildlife near you?

Nonetheless, conversation today reminded me that Facebook Meta has a huge data center west of town that produces unbelievable amounts of light pollution!! WHY???? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you enjoy or learn from attending a local event in your community? How do local traditions and gatherings build resilience and strengthen your community’s identity?

Aside from making plans and brainstorming and coordinating actions -- meetings with like-minded people are often the ONLY WAY TO KEEP GOING!! I love my people! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSoil and FoodWhat did you notice about how much of your food waste could be composted? How does composting change the way you see “waste”?
Joy Johnson 4/11/2026 6:20 PM- Earth Advocate 📣
Between recycling and composting I put hardly anything in the garbage for the truck to pick up each week.
