Jessica's Actions
Education & Livelihood
Plan A Staycation in Your Community

For an upcoming vacation, I will spend 45 minutes planning out a staycation in my region. For reference, one several hour flight releases the equivalent of nearly 14% of the annual emissions from a car.
Education & Livelihood
Watch a Documentary About Education or Work
SDG 4
I will watch 2 documentaries about education or work.
Economy & Communities
Mend Clothing
SDG 9
I will mend clothing for myself, family or friends.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 25 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Health & Equity
Watch a Documentary About Equity, Gender, Health, or Peace
SDG 3, 5, 10, 16
I will watch 1 documentaries about equity, gender, health, or peace.
Basic Needs & Security

Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 15 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 10 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Health & Equity
Donate Food
SDG 3, 10
I will find out what food programs are in my area and donate food and/or other items that they request.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Climate & Ecosystems
Explore My Area
SDG 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 15 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 4 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.
Education & Livelihood
Host or Join a Cleanup Event

Within my community at home or work, I will organize or attend a local cleanup event.
Basic Needs & Security

Reflection QuestionEconomy & Communities Mend ClothingWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
Jessica Jeger 4/26/2023 11:24 AMI am NOT skilled at mending anything! Thread and needles are hard for me to handle, so it is not an activity I will probably continue. -
Reflection QuestionEducation & Livelihood Plan A Staycation in Your CommunityWhat place in your region are you most excited to visit during your staycation?
-
Reflection QuestionClimate & Ecosystems Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Jessica Jeger 4/26/2023 11:23 AMMy favorite two pollinators are bees and bats. Most people don't realize that bats are pollinators too! It is important to take care of them and our ecosystem because they are an important part of our food chain! We need them to produce crops and such. -
Reflection QuestionClimate & Ecosystems Plant a TreeHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Jessica Jeger 4/26/2023 11:21 AMIt always feels good to me to add some new life to the earth. I love to plant seeds, trees and anything! I love watching it thrive and grow! -
Jessica Jeger 4/19/2023 10:29 AMI am really enjoying checkin in everyday and looking for more ways to be eco friendly. I am currently looking for a documentary about equity, health, gender or peace if anyone has a suggestion! -
Reflection QuestionBasic Needs & Security Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian RecipeWhat was the dish you made, and how did it turn out? What did it feel like to try a new recipe? If you can share a picture, please do!
Jessica Jeger 4/19/2023 10:27 AMI tried a tortellini, cheese dish and it was GREAT. I did not even mind the vegan cheese. I did miss sausage in it but, it wouldn't stop me from trying it again. I will look for more vegan options in the future. -
Reflection QuestionHealth & Equity Practice MindfulnessWhat was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?
Jessica Jeger 4/17/2023 8:40 AMThis is a new practice for me. I think that I practice mindfulness as a part of my working brain, but this exercise made it more intentional. It was calming approaching it this way, instead of decision making in a flash, hurry or just to get by. -
Reflection QuestionEducation & Livelihood Work-Life BalanceHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Jessica Jeger 4/17/2023 8:38 AMIt is super important to take a mental break from your work life during the work day, just to distract your mind. Look out a window, take a breath of fresh air from outside or step away from a task. It rejuvenates your mind and helps complete the task with a better mood and attitude. -
Reflection QuestionClimate & Ecosystems Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?
Jessica Jeger 4/17/2023 8:37 AMTook a trip to the Cuddo Unit of the Santee National Wildlife Preserve. It is so breathtaking to see undisturbed forest, wetland areas and the ecosystems that thrive in them. However, it is so disheartening to see the trash and debris that humans leave around these places. WE MUST DO BETTER!!! -
Reflection QuestionHealth & Equity Spend Time OutsideWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Jessica Jeger 4/01/2023 8:14 AMCreativity and imagination are severely affected when all you do is spend time inside glued to screens and electronic stimulus. You become complacent to the simplicities of the world and your own existence. The lack of innovation throughout this country can be directed linked to the amount of time any age group spends glued to a screen. We don't k ow how to do things anymore and what is worse, we are loosing the desire to try new things.
