Learn the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace
Leave No Trace means enjoying nature responsibly by minimizing our impact and leaving the environment as we found it, or better. I will spend 20 minutes learning about the seven core principles to minimize my impact while enjoying the outdoors.
Share My Why
Take the Earth Month Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!
Health and Well-Being
Learn About Emergency Preparedness
Being prepared can save lives during extreme weather. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the most common weather risks in my area and the steps I can take to stay safe, such as signing up for local alerts or identifying nearby shelters.
Wildlife
Learn How to Save the Bees
Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spending 60 minutes learning about local pollinators and why they are so important.
Wildlife
Enjoy a Meatless Meal
Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day.
Land, Water, and Air
Reduce Food Waste
Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species that all play an important role in nature. I will spend 30 minutes learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Health and Well-Being
Enjoy Fruits and Veggies
Adding fruits and vegetables to our meals nourishes our body and the planet. I will prepare and enjoy 3 servings of a variety of colorful fruits and veggies.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money? What patterns did you notice in the food you threw away, and how can you address them?
Sarah Iwata 4/22/2025 8:40 AMThis is a big one for me. I can't afford to throw money away and yet every time I clean out my fridge I am doing exactly that. I need my money for bills and kids, not food waste. It makes me angry with myself and I've been trying to be more consistent about checking for leftovers or produce I need to use before it goes bad. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet? What fruits or vegetables did you try this week, and which was your favorite?
Sarah Iwata 4/22/2025 8:38 AMI think my meat consumption is almost more habit than anything. I find I don't really miss it when I have a well balanced meatless meal! I feel more aware of the impact the meat industries have on the planet and in turn feel good when I intentionally choose to forgo it. I had spring rapini from the farmers market this week and it was amazing! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat native species did you learn about in your area, and how do they contribute to your local ecosystem or community? How might your community change if these native species disappeared?
Sarah Iwata 4/10/2025 3:22 PMI learned about native bees. While honey bees do help pollinate, they are not native to North America. Planting native plants around your yard help the native insect populations. They play important roles in balancing our ecosystems and contribute to food production. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow do pollinators impact your daily life, and what changes can you make to ensure they continue to thrive?
Sarah Iwata 4/08/2025 2:47 PMPollinators aren't just bees, they are also flies, butterflies, moths, beetles and wasps. Without these little buggers, our flowering plants and trees wouldn't reproduce or fruit. Planting native flora is one way of encouraging local pollinators to thrive.
