Jillian's actions
Wildlife
Plant (or Adopt) a Plant
Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.
Wildlife
Learn the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace
Leave No Trace means enjoying nature responsibly by minimizing our impact and leaving the environment as we found it, or better. I will spend 15 minutes learning about the seven core principles to minimize my impact while enjoying the outdoors.
Sustainable Innovation
Choose a Product Made with Sustainable Materials
Every choice matters. I will purchase or switch to products made from sustainable or recycled materials to support innovation and reduce environmental impact.
Sustainable Innovation
Support a Crowdfunded Sustainability Innovation
Small contributions can drive big ideas. I will support a crowdfunded sustainability project to help bring innovative, eco-friendly solutions to life and share the project on social media or on the Ecochallenge feed.
Community and Connection
Meet My Neighbors
Strong neighborhoods are built on connection and trust. I will introduce myself to 2 neighbors or spend time getting to know people in my community.
Sustainable Innovation
Learn about the Magic of Seaweed
Seaweed is a powerful ally for the planet. I will spend 15 minutes learning how seaweed can improve ocean health, capture carbon, support sustainable food systems, and inspire eco-friendly products.
Community and Connection
Explore My Area
Discovering what’s nearby fosters a deeper connection to my community. I will explore 5 new places in my area, such as parks, historical sites, or local businesses.
Community and Connection
Swap and Share with Others
Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 5 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Land, Water, and Air
Collect Rain Water
Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports gardens. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for 2 outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.
Land, Water, and Air
Conduct a Home Energy Audit
Reducing energy use helps protect the air and climate. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy and reduce pollution.
Land, Water, and Air
Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.
Empowering the Next Generation
Support a Youth-Led Project
Youth-led projects drive innovation and change. I will support youth-led environmental projects by offering time, resources, or encouragement and share how I supported youth on the Ecochallenge feed.
Empowering the Next Generation
Support a School
Schools play a crucial role in youth development and be hubs for sustainability. I will donate funds, time, or supplies to 2 local schools to support environmental education, field trips, sustainability projects, and youth empowerment. I will share how I supported schools on the feed.
Empowering the Next Generation
Conduct an Audit with a Young Person
Learning by doing empowers youth. I will conduct an environmental audit — such as a home energy or waste audit — alongside a young person to teach them practical sustainability skills and see what I learn from them as well.
Health and Well-Being
Go Get a Check Up
Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.
Health and Well-Being
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Health and Well-Being
Meditate
Meditation helps build resilience and clarity. I will spend 3 minutes each day to meditate or create a moment of silence each day to reflect on things important to me.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEmpowering the Next GenerationHow can schools play a bigger role in shaping future environmental leaders, and how can you support them?
Jillian Irving 4/30/2025 10:57 PMSchools can teach kids from a young age to understand the environment and the threats that are facing it. This provides an opportunity to teach kids why they should care and may show them that it is a path they want to take in their career. Schools can also be the place where kids learn how to speak up for what they care about and learn how to create change. You can support schools by volunteering to share your knowledge, donating supplies, and donating money to further enviromental education. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEmpowering the Next GenerationWhat impressed you most about the youth-led project you supported, and how did your involvement help?
Jillian Irving 4/30/2025 10:51 PMI helped to support a youth led beach clean-up. I was impressed with how well organized and self-sufficient the youths that were leading it were. They really didn't need a lot of extra help with the formation and organizing of the project. I mainly just watched to make sure the kids were safe and picked up trash. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEmpowering the Next GenerationWhat did you and the young person learn from conducting the audit together, and how did it change their understanding of sustainability? Did anything change about your understanding of sustainability?
Jillian Irving 4/30/2025 10:46 PMI helped my young neighbor conduct an online energy audit of their hom. I think it helped both of us further our understanding of the electricity being used around the house and how energy usage impacts the enviroment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirWhat did you discover during your energy audit that you weren’t aware of before? What steps will you take to reduce energy use, and how will they benefit both the environment and your household?
Jillian Irving 4/30/2025 3:03 PMIt helped me discover that there is a lot of energy being used, especially by older appliances, that I hadn't thought about before. I could switch out the light bulbs in our house with LED light bulbs and only run things like my dishwasher, clothes washer, and dryer on full loads. This is better for the environment because using less means there is less of a demand to produce electricity which causes climate change with the burning of fossil fuels. It is also better for my household because we will be spending less money on energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirHow did collecting rainwater influence your understanding of sustainable water use? What tasks or activities could benefit most from rainwater collection in your household?
Jillian Irving 4/30/2025 2:50 PMCollecting rainwater in rain barrels showed me how much rain water could be used instead water from the water company. The rainwater could be saved and used to water the at home garden when there hasn't been rain. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirHow did changing your dishwashing habits make you more mindful of water use? What other small changes can you make to conserve water in your household?
Jillian Irving 4/30/2025 2:37 PMChanging my dishwashing habits made me more aware of how much water was being wasted by the tap running when it didn't really need to be. To save more water I could also turn off the water in the shower when I don't need it to rinse and keep them as short as possible. I could also turn off the tap when I'm washing my hands and only turn it on the rinse the soap off. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationWhat sustainability project did you support, and why did it resonate with you?
Jillian Irving 4/28/2025 2:54 PMA sustainable crowdfunding platform I learned about and supported is called EcoCrowd. It is a place where people can share, discuss and create their sustainable ideas and shows how public funds can be used to address environmental issues. This resonated with me because I have found that sometimes the hardest part of living sustainably is just knowing where to start. With this platform people can share and support each other in their journey to live more sustainably. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationWhat new insights did you gain about seaweed’s role in combating environmental challenges? Were you surprised how many products you may already be using contain seaweed?
Jillian Irving 4/28/2025 2:45 PMSeaweed absorbs carbon dioxide, reducing our carbon footprint, and helping to mitigate ocean acidification. Seaweed can also reduce nutrient pollution, by absorbing excess nutrients, and provides a vital habitat to lots of marine life. It is also a healthy food source that is more sustainable than traditional land based agriculture. It offers an alternative in fossil fuel-based industries, biofuel and plastic production. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationWhat sustainable product did you purchase, and how does it align with your values?
Jillian Irving 4/28/2025 2:27 PMI have been needing a sports jacket, so I purchased a sports jacket made from recycled plastic. This is important because so much plastic serves it's purpose and discarded to pollute the earth for the incredibly long time that it takes to decompose. This repurposes the plastic so that more use can be gotten out of it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Jillian Irving 4/28/2025 12:29 PMI participated in a clothing swap where I my mom and I donated multiple big bags of clothes ourselves, and came away with a few stuff for ourselves. This is mutually beneficial as you have the opportunity to clear out your closet and get rid of stuff you no longer want, and find new stuff you will actually wear. It's also better for the environment because those clothes are getting more use instead of going in the trash, and you are not buying new clothes, contributing to even more fast fashion being pumped out into the world.
